Univeristy of Washington- Seattle Fine Arts Requirement?

I’m a little confused with the CADR (College Academic Distribution Requirements) of UW. It says I need credits in a minimum of 6 subject areas but also 0.5 of a fine arts credit? I’ve taken programming in HS but thats about it. Can I still apply even if I don’t have this fine arts requirement?

Fine, Visual, or Performing Arts 0.5

If completed in high school

One-half credit or one trimester of study is required in the fine, visual, or performing arts, to be chosen from art appreciation, band, ceramics, choir, dance, dramatic performance and production, drawing, fiber arts, graphic arts, metal design, music appreciation, music theory, orchestra, painting, photography, print making, or sculpture.

Courses generally not accepted include architecture, color guard, creative writing, drafting, drill team, fashion design, foreign languages, interior design, sewing, speech, woodworking, and yearbook.

If made up through college coursework

Two quarter credits (or 2 semester credits) chosen from any of the following subjects will satisfy the requirement:

Art, art history, cinema/filmmaking, dance, music, or photography;
Any course in drama except drama as literature courses.
Courses in architecture are generally not accepted, except for those in architectural history if completed in high school.

So my application will be discarded immediately if I apply? All because I didn’t take half a semester in a fine arts?

I should add that to graduate my school requires taking a fine arts OR technology based course. I chose to take the latter.

I’m fairly sure that the requirement is strict, but you could email and ask for a waiver.

Do you live in Washington? If so, I’m surprised that your counseling department didn’t inform you of the requirement. The only public schools that I know of that require fine art are the UCs and UDub.

You can still take the art course online, for credit or non-credit. But I would still suggest to call or e-mail admission office and ask.

Ya i just called and the admissions representative told me that I’d still be reviewed but I’d have to take a fine arts course the first year there, if i am admitted. It honestly sounds kind of silly to me since I have very little interest in fine arts but those are the University’s rules I guess. Thanks for your response.
