Univeristy Region X TAG vs UC TAG

Okay I got a letter from my Community College that said I was eligible for the University region X TAG program. The requirements for this program was to have a 3.0 and you'll be given garunteed acceptance to UCSD. I'm really confused because on the UCSD site it says that the requirement for TAG is 3.5. Should I fill the official TAG online or this form my school requires. It only for UCSD I think, and UCSD is on the top of list for transfer univerisites.

That’s interesting, I do know that tag for UCSD was increased to 3.5. Maybe the letter sent to you was old. My best advise would be to ask a counselor at your community college. Let us know what happens.

Good luck.

They are two different programs. Information on the Region X one is available here:

If you are eligible for that one, the GPA requirement is a 3.0 rather than the traditional 3.5 for UCSD TAG. Regardless to which you apply for, neither guarantees major, just admission, but the Region X one has a lot more specific requirements on the time frame in which an eligible student can apply so be careful!

At this point, I haven’t heard from any people who have participated in Region X to know if the major acceptance rate might be higher (aka they receive a bit more major priority than regular TAG students). Personally, I would email your school and ask which is more preferential or if it doesn’t matter.

There is actually a difference between the Region X tag and the University Link Program. I actually just signed my Region X tag yesterdayl. Like the above poster said, there are usually two types of guarantees for UCSD: TAG and University Link. Tag requires a 3.5, and University Link requires a 3.0 but needs to be signed right out of high school or as a college freshman. When UCSD changed their TAG requirements to a 3.5, the local community colleges in San Diego (Region X colleges) caused quite a stir with UCSD, in which they ultimately created the Region X Transitional Program (Region X TAG). It basically honors a guaranteed acceptance to UCSD if you are a student in one of the Region X schools with a 3.0. However this program is only for those planning to transfer in Fall 2012, so its basically a one time thing. The requirements are almost completely identical to that of the UniversityLink program except that you don’t need to be a freshman out of highschool. The intentions of the program is for those that were on track to transfer to UCSD, but ultimately find themselves not eligible due to the raise in TAG GPA requirements.

My advice: Signing the Region X tag is just like the other programs to UCSD, so you will get in as long you meet the requirements. This is basically the last chance to get guaranteed with 3.0 besides the University Link Program. To sign your contract, you MUST talk to a counselor since only a counselor can put you in the program. Also, signing the Region X TAG still allows you to TAG another UC school just as you would through the UC TAG website. Hope this helps!

^ this is my second year at the CC, but I still received the university region X TAG application from my school. So does that make me still eligible?? I will be transferring fall of 2012 tho.

Yes, you should still be eligible as long as you go to a region x school, have 30 units finished by the end of the fall semester, have at least at 3.0, and plan to have IGETC and 60 units finished before you transfer.

Thank you so much for clarifying this. I think it’s important for transfers to realize that this program is only for 2012 so far. I also doubt that it’ll be around in 2013 since the students who would consequently be the CC freshman next year have already had an opportunity to apply for the program as HS seniors in 2012.

On that note, I think that the non-TAG and non-UniversityLink acceptance standards are going to be comparable to this past year, since there are still SO many students that will be participating in these programs and lowering the available space for other student’s acceptance.

Did your semester start yet? I’d double check with them but maybe very few transfers were aware of the program so they decided to notify some right before school starts.

If we did the region x tag, do we have to apply for the regular TAG as well?

And is this just for UCSD?

@jaybyron: Thanks so much for this info. This is very good news since I’m one of those students who weren’t eligible to TAG to UCSD when they changed their GPA requirement.
