I intend to apply to Turkey. Any current undergraduate or graduate would like to tell me about their experience, the level of education and which university they applied to including the financial aid situation. Also which university in Turkey will be best for a BS in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics in Turkey?
Bilkent University and Middle East Technical University(METU) are the two most highly ranked universities in turkey.METU is public (low tuition fees),Bilkent is private.(More tuition fees but better international environment, more facilities, better faculty etc). Both award financial aid to international students based on their academic performances.i.e High School grades and SAT scores.
What is the scholarship criteria and how much is it offered?
LUMS is way better than the two unis u have mentioned above. Don’t just think about going abroad. If UK or US or Canada that is absolutely fine. And Jacobs is fine. But don’t aim to go to turkey because lums is more reputed.
UK is out of the question.
If I do apply to Canada my aim is to get the co-op program which is difficult to get (possibly will apply to Waterloo)
Already applying to US (maybe 10 uni’s)
I do intend to apply to Jacob’s.
Also I am applying to Australia as well.
What about Hong Kong University?
Can you clarify why Turkey will not be a better option than LUMS? I am only applying to GIKI and LUMS in Pakistan.
Bilkent is to Turkey as Lums is to Pakistan. Both have immense values in their own countries. Lums, in my point of view is very good as if u do bachelors from Turkey and return to Pakistan u will be treated at the same or perhaps a lower level in terms of jobs. If u want to settle in Turkey Bilkent would be good for u. However, if u intend to return to Pakistan u will have problems in the job sector.
@ZainSD what r ur credentials? Do apply to US. If u need full need go for Amherst and the need blind ivies. Because there is no point in applying to unis which factor ur ability to pay when rendering an admissions decision. Also apply to NYUAD and NYUSH. Texas A & M Qatar.
I got into NYUNY with 30000 scholarship.
Jacobs is fine. But understand they give loan with interest which is not acceptable (know what I mean).
Hong Kong is good. Australia is also good. Apply to NUS or NTU as well.
Good luck.
@juggu96
For US, I intend to apply to Amherst,Macalester,Bates,Wooster,University of Iowa,Drake University,Texas A&M in Qatar and NYUSH (the list continues)
For Australia, I intend to apply to University of Wollongong and University of Southern Queensland.
For HK, its HKU.
Jacob’s was a maybe so i’ll take it out of my list.
I have heard NUS has a low acceptance rate. Its a maybe there but I will go for NTU.
@ZainSD Do u need full aid? If yes, do not apply to colleges such as Macalester, bates, drake uni, Wooster. My friend was very highly qualified and he didn’t even get into franklin and Marshall basically due to his finances. If no, by all means apply.
Do apply to Amherst, Cornell (but not for engineering, for maths). Apply to ivy leagues which are need blind. Apply to Texas A & M qatar. Apply to Oxford. Don’t miss it. They offer full scholarship- Vicky noon. Do apply. Also apply to LSE they also offer full scholarship. Don’t forget Carnegie Qatar. APPLY TO NUS.
I do not stand a chance for the ivy leagues(though I did thought of applying to Brown). That is why I am looking for something below it . This year 2 students from my school got into Bates and Wooster on Full Aid/Scholarship. 2 students from a different school got into Drake University and Macalester on full scholarship as well.
I am aiming for 5 on the list:
Macalester: It has a major I want to study: Applied Mathematics and Statistics +Aid
Wooster: Good aid
NYUSH: Good aid+self designed major
Amherst: Good aid
Texas A&M Qatar: Good aid.
I do not intend to apply to UK so LSE and Oxford are out.
Carnegie in Qatar does not offer the major I aim for.
What other universities in the US should I aim for if I need full aid(other then top tier universities and IVY League)? Examples of Liberal Arts Colleges or Research universities would be preferred.
Can you also confirm that the colleges you mentioned do not offer full aid/scholarship?
And what other countries should I apply to other than the usual for full aid(leaving out US,UK,Canada,Australia,Germany)?
NUS has a really low acceptance rate. Would apply but really slim chance of getting in. NTU might take me.
Also what other universities in Australia might offer internationals good aid?
Do you know anything about Co-op program in Canada and what are the chances of getting it it?
Thanks for the information you provided.
Only some of the Ivy League schools are need blind for international students. Bates doesn’t charge international students an application fee and they’re known for being generous with aid to internationals. Some schools that aren’t officially need blind are what’s called partially need blind. What that means is that they compose the first 70 or 80% of the class need blind, then look at finances for the last 20 or 30% of the class. The key is to be in the top 70% of the admitted class.
Admissions for international students is notoriously unpredictable. I wouldn’t base your strategy on a few anecdotal results.

@ZainSD Do apply to Cornell as it I need blind for intls. In such need aware unis competition is very intense. If the unis normal admit rate is 15%, the admit rate for those requiring aid is about 3%.
I am telling u from personal experience that at this point ur main aim should B getting into a good uni, not the major O degree. Think again abt UK.
There r no countries other than the ones u have mentioned above where u can apply. Co op is offered by Waterloo do apply.
Which school do u go to and what r ur credentials?
My counsellor recommended some of the few colleges in this list:
Macalester College
Bates Colleges
Trinity College
Grinell College
Franklin and Marshall College
I have heard of several universities in Europe that are free to internationals such that of those in Norway,Germany and Czech Republic.
UK hardly gives any aid. No chance of going there.
Waterloo is the only university I intend to apply in Canada. I intend to accept its offer if it provides me with Co-op program.
My school is LGS JT.

Bilkent and Metu are much better than LUMS in engineering Department i dont know about Business and other Department as METU is in top 430 universities and Bilkent is in top 394 whereas LUMS is considered to be on top 701 so i think these universities are much way better than LUMS.
@ZainSD
Does U Wollongong offer scholarships/aid?
