Universities/LACs with good science programs

Okay, I'm really pushing it to the limit with my college choices. As in, I'm really procrastinating. I have already applied to two top-choice universities and got into both (one was EA, the other was rolling). But now I feel I should apply to just a few more, just to widen my horizons, compare FA, and also in case I visit these two schools and don't like either of them (I haven't visited either) and want something else to fall back on that I might also enjoy.

Which top schools (yes, I know it's bad to be asking for top schools but well... I am) are best for their science programs? These can be unis, LACs, etc. I know that Princeton is good for science. Any others? Thanks for all of your help in advance! :)

BTW, I would prefer schools with good music programs as well (but since usually a good uni comes with a strong music program, I'm more worried about the LACs).

LACs that we visited that were good both for music and the sciences included Williams, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Scripps, Pomona, and Bard (the last is especially recruiting students in the sciences, and has scholarship money for that purpose.) We kicked the tires on a lot more, but those are the only ones I would feel confident recommending.

For a school of its size and stature, we thought music at Princeton was profoundly mediocre. But you should kick the tires yourself.

i agree with Mini's post. If you're an excellent musician, I'd also add Oberlin and Rice to that list (if you're merely good, scratch them both because "merely good" musicians kinda get the shaft at those colleges).

Look at University of Rochester. It has good science programs, and a top music program- the Eastman School of Music. Also gives merit aid based on you SATs.

Northwestern University!

BTW, the music thing is only secondary. As long as they have a respectable music program, then that's fine. The science thing is primary. :)

Could you be more specific in what you want in a "respectable" music program? Do you play? Sing? Compose? Interested in music history? Love opera? Rock bands? Electronic music? Psychology of music?

The science part is easy, which is why I am focusing on the music part. (But my recommendations above would stand, in any case.)

Hehe, I would say singing, composing, and choir/orchestra type stuff. Electronic music too.

Without the music part, which schools would you recommend for science (LACs and unis)

Michigan. Check out the Hill Auditorium and the Men's Glee Club (the second oldest collegiate chorus in the country). Y'all know about the academic part...

... and the Women's Glee Club rocks too... and the Michigan Marching Band.

"Without the music part, which schools would you recommend for science (LACs and unis)"

There are a couple of hundred good ones. Statitiscally, corrected for entering SAT scores, the best science schools in the country as determined by future Ph.D. productivity are Kalamazoo, Hope, Earlham, St. Olaf's, Reed, Harvey Mudd, and Grinnell. None of the Ivies, nor JHU, nor Stanford, nor UMich, break the top 10. If you are female, add in Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, and Smith.

If you're looking for schools with excellent science programs and excellent music programs, you really should have St. Olaf (mentioned by mini), Lawrence U (in Wisc.), and Oberlin (Ohio) on your list to consider. I'd also add Carleton, Whitman, Davidson, and Pomona to mini's excellent list.
