Universities not discussed in CC

"Blue147
I know several kids who go to Nothern, they like it. I do not think it is very academic or rigorous school in general so it will be up to you- you will get out of it what you put in.
Did you try to work on your grades this past semester? Take another ACT? It might not get you in the college of your dreams but it will improve your studing skills for future."

I was already accepted in this university. Thanks...

"If my opinion gets a dialogue going, then it has served its purpose.
I will try to post other schools in my region but I don't want to hear slack because its not a HYPS or any other elitist school."

There are some jerks who will say that. That's their problem, and can cause them to lose posting privileges on CC. Most people who come to CC are very supportive of all kinds of college aspirations. Ignore the jerks. Appreciate the many who are helpful, and add your help to the mix, too.

"Maybe we can start a regional section like Midwest, West, East, South so there is a balanced coverage of schools. "

Good idea! I suggest that you post it in the community & forum issues board so the site owners see it.

"Another thing, lay of URM's trying to find info on colleges. My dd who happens to be a URM is a freshman in high school. I dare let someone say she got into college because of AA."

There are jerks who will say that. That is their problem. I'm sure that some will say that about my son, a black male with a 1540 v, m score. That's their problem.

From what I've seen lots of those people who complain about URMs allegedly getting their spots at colleges are students who are chronic whiners who didn't get into their colleges probably because of their warped attitudes. I'm sure that URMs aren't the only people or things that those students blame when they don't get what they want.

Anyway, the rare people here who make very racist comments disappear because they lose privileges.

Meanwhile, you can help CC continue to be a good place by reporting offensive posts and by continuing to contribute, including by providing info and asking for info on colleges that are not discussed much here.

Since many people find CC after using a search engine to find out info on a particular college, any mention of a lower ranked college here can attract members who are more interested in that type of college, and if they take the time to post, that will attract more members with similar interests.

Among the nonHPYS colleges that have been mentioned a fair amount this year have been Earlham, Beloit and College of the Redwoods, all of which got increasingly more posts on the Parents Forum because some parents visited them and then posted about their experiences.

jenrik,
I checked your back posts to see how much info you were posting about some of the schools that you think should get more notice here.
This the type of post that I found:
"I am a graduate of UIC University of Illinois at Chicago (it is evident on the CC board that people think UIC is such an inferior school compared to UIUC) My family could not afford to send me away, and instead of my parents wanting me to incur debt, they wanted me to attend UIC. I was a commuter. Now being a commuter has it advantages and disadvantages but this is not the forum for that. It seems like any school in the city of Chicago is not good enough for this CC board--schools like DePaul (which I attended grad school), Loyola which I know are fine schools are getting negative responses. Again, we are not here for that.. "

I think that if you provided information in a more positive way, you might be able to expand people's awareness more of the colleges like UIC that you like and think should be considered more by people here.

From what I noticed, your posts seem to rip into the relatively few people here who do make fun of schools that aren't considered elite. If instead of defending schools against the closed minded, you simply posted something like, "I had a good experience at UIC, and here's what I think it has to offer," then you might do a great deal to open up CC to people posting about a wider variety of colleges.

I've been on CC for years, and at first, there was little mention of HBCUs. Although I'm an Ivy grad, I've worked at HBCUs, so would go out of my way to respond to posts asking about them, and I also would let people know about HBCUs that might meet their needs. As a result, I've seen more people posting about them (though there still are not a lot of such posts probably because it seems that relatively few blacks use CC and most that do are like the other posters mainly interested in the schools like HPYS, where admission is highly competitive and quirky).

For info about colleges not mentioned much here, Livejournal.com's interest groups can be helpful because you can read the blogs of students who attend such colleges.

i have found this site incredibly helpful in digging up potential schools that aren't well known. It was here that I found out about Loren Pope's book Colleges That Change Lives, and an LJ community for alternative colleges
