Universities with schools of art/design

My daughter is very interested in art (especially illustration) but also wants to pursue her study of East Asian languages. Does anyone know of a university with a school of art/design that offers a B.A. in art, rather than (or as an alternative to) a B.F.A.? I think the B.F.A. route would be too narrow for her.

I think Yale has an art school

Thanks - any other suggestions? Yale is so selective.

UCLA and USC

I can’t think of any college or university – public or private, small/medium/large – that doesn’t have an art department. Not sure which ones only offer an BFA, but my understanding is that the BA is fairly common.

East Asian languages like Chinese and Japanese are also fairly common. Korean less so.

Maybe if you could give more information about your daughter’s profile and what she’s looking for in a college (size, location, ambience etc) we could come up with some suggestions.

My son majored in art studio / art history at Williams. He was primarily interested in small/medium colleges/universities, but for your information his list was: Yale, Brown, Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Skidmore, Conn College, Kenyon. I’d add Smith for your daughter. Also Vassar and Oberlin.

Thanks, momrath. What my daughter wants is a university with a dedicated school of art that offers not only a B.F.A. degree but also a B.A. in art. She wants a school with superior facilities and a broad array of art courses but thinks a B.F.A. program will not leave enough time for her to pursue her other interests, especially Chinese and Korean language classes. She is a good student with a 2250 on the SAT and a 3.77 GPA. In terms of art, she would like to attend a school with a strong illustration program. Oh, and the school shouldn’t be in too cold a climate (although this negotiable) and the dorms should have really nice bathrooms! Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That’s quite a wishlist! Northeast and midwest = cold. And I don’t even want to start on bathrooms. Not a strong point of college dorms, anywhere. Maybe look for schools that offer single gender facilities?

Illustration and graphic art aren’t a focus of most programs outside of art schools, though drawing and print making are commonly found.

For Korean, she’d have to check one by one. It’s not impossible to find, but less widespread than Chinese and Japanese.

I might suggest Brown which has a connection with RISD. Or Tufts with the Boston Museum School. Also Smith and Haverford because of their consortiums with larger universities.

Take a look at UCONN (cold though in the winter).

About 40k/year for OOS students.

Thanks, momrath and slumom!
