i'm really happy for my friend who got it! but i'm a bit confused at how he pulled it off. he really has no hooks in his grades, ecs, or sats. his gpa is pretty high but nothing good enough to get him a good top 5 rank, his sats are 1200 ish , and his ECs are pretty good, sports, band, and stuff. but i dont see how that would have gotten him the award as i was really shooting for it also. was it mostly based on the essays?

What award are you talking about? Is it given to students entering as first years?

nm nm, there were other qualifications that had to do with finainaiial aid, and ethniciity, etc

I dont think it had to do with financial Aid. I am one of the recipients of the award. And i can assure you my family doesnt qualify for F.A. Besides I was selected before I even sent in any of the F.A. forms.

But i believe the ethnicity had to do with part of it.

btw only about 50 ppl recieve it every year

well i read like a thing about it. and it was mainly targeted to people that would help bring diversity to uva or people who had been brought up underd different upbringings usuually. and of course excelled in school.

Okay, I just got the inside scoop on the University Achievement Awards. Apparently, UVa offered 100 of them this year. This scholarship program is designed to attract exceptional in-state students to UVa. Academic merit, leadership, and citizenship are primary considerations, and all in-state applicants are automatically considered for the scholarship, but to be awarded the scholarship, a student must also satisfy AT LEAST TWO of the following conditions:

(1) have a history of overcoming disadvantage; (2) be a first generation college student; (3) be a member of an underrepresented minority or ethnic group; (4) be a member of a low income family; (5) reside in a rural or inner-city location; (6) have been raised in a single parent household.

I forgot to mention that the University Achievement Award is a full-ride to UVa.

Oh yea, i have a question about "Full-Ride"

I know for sure that the UVA Achievement Award only pays for tuition, BUT NOT for Room/Board. So is that still considered a Full-Ride????

Thanks

I thought it was considered full-tuition, I thought full-ride was tuition + the room/board

Yes, a full-ride is where tuition and room/board are covered. I thought the UAA covered everything. Oops.
