University Achievement Scholarship

I was recently accepted as James Scholar for CS.

Here are my stats:

Note: I am an international applicant (Indian)

SAT Score: 2330 (800 M, 800 W, 730 CR)

SAT II Score: 2380 (800 Math, 800 Chem, 780 Phy)

Grades: All A+ from grade 9-11. (12th not reported but they’re also A+)

Class Rank: NA.

Essays: 8/10

ECs/Honors: Lots and lots of National and International Level wins (I have a 5 page resume filled with them and thankfully, the application had lots of space which I used up completely)

Leadership: President Student Council in my school. (other club memberships also).

My friends have told me my profile is great! Also, lots of my friends with stats much much lesser than me have got in. Hence, I was expecting some scholarship amount.

I know UIUC has very less funds. But their website states that they offer 8K-12K University Achievement Scholarship. If I qualify, is the notification later? Since the portal didn’t say anything yet, does that mean I haven’t received it?

If someone has received this scholarship, please post here. If someone knows when the scholarship notifications are out, please let me know.

Thanks :slight_smile:

Upon searching on the net, it seems that James Scholar will help me register for classes earlier. Are there any other benefits?

Would have been listed.

@goinggoing‌

Damn :confused:
Do you know some stats of those applicants who received it?

I know one…
NMF
ACT 36
GPA 5.0/5.0UW
National AP Scholar
Class Rank 1/~680

But, maybe as kids decline offers they’ll reassign $.

@goinggoing‌

Thanks!
Those stats are incomparable, LOL :stuck_out_tongue:

According to the UIUC website, scholarships and honors notifications can occur anywhere from now through the first week of March. Do you have your official notice of admissions letter yet? (It’s available on MyIllini down near the bottom of the accepted student checklist page).

It says above the honors section in your admissions page. I recieved it with my admission but I think it’s still possible to get one later on.

@BMEAero‌

Nope, the letter is not yet available. Does that signify something?

@evalley3‌

Are you an international? The university distributes Illinois Residents’ funds first, at least that’s what I’ve heard.

@determined2300 I don’t know. Mine isn’t yet, and I have neither honors nor scholarship info. My ACT score supposedly qualified me for honors.

@BMEAero‌

The absence of an official letter doesn’t signify anything.
I think you have a good shot at several other schools better than UIUC also. Where else have you tried?

As for the UIUC Honors, don’t worry. UIUC has a very low yield (just 7000 out of 20000 enrolled). So, don’t worry. You’ll receive an offer sooner or later.

@‌ determined2300 I’m out of state (CA) so I got the University Achievement Scholarship

@evalley3‌

Congratulations!
Do you know of any internationals who got it?
Also, how much is the amount? Would you be accepting it?

@determined2300‌ I did a few in-states (CU Boulder, Colorado School of Mines), UIUC, Georiga Tech, Rice, Berkeley, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins. Issue comes down to money if I do get in elsewhere. Also, I may stand out a little more at UIUC, which could afford interesting opportunities

@BMEAero‌

Best of Luck for other universities! I saw your chance me thread and you have a FANTASTIC profile :smiley:
I’m sure you’ll get in more universities (you have a good chance even at Stanford!) :slight_smile:

@jakla17‌

Congratulations!
8K is actually too less. IMO, you should have gotten 12K (unfortunately that’s the highest available for OOS).

Thanks! No, not many people here in CA apply to uiuc, international or not. I got 8000/year and I’m considering it for now. The tuition is still very expensive for out of state and international especially. You have fantastic stats, but because your major is one of the most competitive it is definitely more difficult to get scholarships. But anyway, you still have a good chance. Good luck!!

@determined2300 Thanks! I hope you make your target as well, whatever it may be. You have a really, really good profile as well.

To all about financial aid: yeah UIUC is an expensive OOS. It’s similar to Ga. Tech, Berkeley, and UMich in that it is a public with very strong engineering, attracting applicants targeting both publics and privates. Good luck to all for the scholarships, as they come out. Any idea when the Engineering-specific ones will be awarded?

@BMEAero‌

Thanks!
BTW, why do you think UIUC is similar to GaTech and Berkeley?

Sure, it ranks #6 in USNews rankings and it’s Engg program is definitely good, not bad. But I have seen that UIUC is literally fishing for students. It has taken almost 10-12 students from my school; some of them got admitted to Engg with absolutely 0 ECs, average grades, average essays (they made me proofread) and also SATs around 2000. And when I saw that so many of them got in, it seemed like there was zero competition.

Yes, I agree some highly qualified students were rejected. But there may be some concrete reason. Only one student from my school was rejected. ONE out of 12!

At the same time, schools like GaTech are turning away the best of their applicants. Several qualified students from my school were rejected in EA. And only 2 got in!

And let’s not even talk about Berkeley :stuck_out_tongue: Their EECS program wields a sickle that sifts through applicants searching for a Koh-i-noor in a stack of diamonds. Even 2300+s have been turned away ruthlessly.

So, personally, I feel that GaTech and Berkeley will have a much more competitive and qualified pool of applicants than UIUC on campus.

**Note to all readers: This is just an opinion of a student. I may be completely wrong, I know. No need to get hostile here :slight_smile: **

@evalley3 Where do you get your information? Many students from CA apply and then attend UIUC. In fact, outside of IL, CA sends the most students to UIUC.
