university apartments...

im having some housing dilemmas. im going to be a 3rd year next year and im trying to figure out the rooming situation. my good friends are 4th years and are gonna move off campus. my current roomie who i love is trying to be an RA. i wanted to stay on campus one more year cause i like the dorms but i think it might suck considering my entire floor this year is freshmen....my options are basically: 1. be with an ok roommate and hope for a cool floor with some older people, the convenience of being on campus will be good 2. move to apartment with friends and suffer the inconveniences. has anyone lived in a university apartment? experiences? help :(

i live in a university apartment.

I used to walk to campus (it's a 35 minute walk to N campus), but now i just walk to graduate housing and take the shuttle which drops me off at north campus...

i'd say it's probably more quiet around here than at the dorms, because i can study in my apartment no problem..like the past few weeks it's been dead silent...prior to that there were scattered parties but not that much. It's not the most social place to live, really.

It's nice having your own kitchen and you save bundles of money. Me, i was lucky to be granted parking at my apartment, so i found i could also bring my car.

I'm a transfer student so i've never even been to the dorms, but minus my horrible roommates (who luckily are never home) ive been having a relatively good experience.

I lived on Landfair in Westwood Chateau (what an awful name), and loved it. I miss it, in fact. It was my best living experience while at UCLA. Close enough to be fun, far enough to be quiet.

So the deadline to apply for on-campus housing/University apartments is coming up soon, and I'm still deciding if I want to live in a University Apartment, or look elsewhere for next year. For those who have lived (or currently live) in a University Apartment, what was the experience like? How were the rooms/kitchen/bathrooms? Do they keep up the maintenance of the rooms well?

I'm only asking because I used to live in an off-campus apartment on Kelton last year during the summer, and the manager was horrible with maintenance. Our stove was probably from the 70's, the toilet would flush once in awhile, and the screen to the back wouldn't close all the way, leading the way for burglars and intruders to easily access our apartment. Apparently, I heard a lot of Westwood landlords/managers are just as bad as mine too.

I've never lived in an apartment other than the University Apartments so I can't make the comparison you're seeking, but I can tell you that the kitchen appliances are awesome but the Time Warner Cable internet access has been going down for hours at a time every few days this quarter. Also, the government-mandated low-flow toilets that were recently installed are really weak, but I suspect they've also been installed in the dorms by now.

Werd these new toilets suck. But, the maintaince is generally good and very fast. I had an issue that took awhile to fix and they took the cheap way out, but it was like a 1 in a million sort of thing.
