University as Big Business: Drexel Moves to the Next Level

For those of you who are convinced higher education is just another big business, take a look at the front page of today’s Journal: “How Dr. Papadakis Runs a University Like a Company.” This piece on Drexel will give you all the ammunition you need. For those who are not convinced, the article may change you mind (at least with respect to Drexel – can the rest be far behind?).

Colleges are businesses. Why do so many have a problem with this? In an ideal world education would be pure. So would pharmaceutical companies with life saving drugs. Access to top medical care would be available to all. Prime land would not be the property of the rich.

None of this will ever be the case.

hmm ... I not sure I totally buy the analogy of schools being like a "big business" ... I think many pieces of it fit that model but maybe more like a non-profit "business" like a museum or a symphony ... they want to bring in customers but beyond making the financial aspects work there is also a "higher mission".

Does not want me to send a kid to Drexel.
In the same WSJ, kids hanging around Wal Mart for fun. That doesn't sound good either.
