University at Buffalo Class 2022 Thread

Can anyone tell me what they think my chances might be with a 1220 SAT and 3.4 GPA?

@stechin

Well, here was our thinking. My son wants to go into business. He believe he wants to go into accounting. If and when the time comes, recruiters from the large accounting firms look at gpa. It is a very gpa driven industry. My son just felt that going to an honors college really has no advantage. He would rather get a 3.5 in the non honors college than lets say a 3.2 or 3.3 in the honors. The big 4 accounting firms do not say hey he got a 3.2 that is equivalent to a 3.5 if it were not honors.

Also, in alot of these honors colleges like Buffalo, and Albany, you have to write a thesis down the road. That is not my son’s thing. He is not Hemingway, he does not love to write. He can do a decent job, but it is not his passion. I had to keep on him just to do the supplemental essays for schools like Baruch scholars, Lehigh etc. So, that said, you have to know your child.

Do not get me wrong, there are perks with these honors colleges. Preferred class registration and dorming with the same types of students which is nice. However, the benefits did not out weigh cons to him. The last thing my son wants to take is honors literature, or honors history. LOL He would want to poke his eyes out. He just wants to do his calc, statistics, economics and be on his way.

Now, if he ever got into the Binghamton PWC scholars program (which is a looooooong shot ) with a 32 act and 94.8 gpa, that he would do because there is no thesis. Just some honors classes which do not seem too too crazy.

But, congrats to you, that is great you got in. I know BING may be your first choice, we just have to be patient.

No thesis required for honors college. Older son graduated last year and younger son is currently there, both honors college, both presidential scholars. Not even sure that they have to take special Honors versions of classes. That I’ll have to ask. They do have an honors coloquiem that meets with bare minimal requirements. One advantage of the honors college is that they have a recitation class that they go to that goes along with the main class (smaller class size, more personalized instruction) Both my sons prefer that over the regular class. Lots of opportunity to be involved in honors college activities but not required. It’s a great way to make a very large campus a bit smaller.

Quick question. Many of my S friends have just gotten admitted from the same high school. He has not heard back yet however has equal or higher stats and extracurriculars than them. Does this mean he did not get in or he could get his acceptance at a later date?

From seeing past years on cc, it doesn’t necesarily mean he won’t get in. Seems like they wait for all the better students to apply, accept them first and wait on certain other students. Many kids got in last year very late who never thought they were getting in. If you scroll and read through this SUNY at Buff page, you’ll see it happening many times.

Do I have to wait for the actual letter in the mail to find out if I got into the honors college? Haven’t been able to find clear info on this. There was no mention of it whatsoever on the online acceptance.

For all admitted, well prepare for the future college life. UB has tons of opportunities and chances, definitely a decent school. Congratulation to everyone.

@Mrt1219 no mention of honors college with my son’s acceptance either…I’m thinking it may be in whatever is sent in the mail. We’ll see!
