@Brad101 - I agree with your comments. My son got into UB Engineering - his stats are slightly higher than yours but his GPA is nowhere near the prep scholar cited average. In addition, GPA is confusing because of weighted vs unweighted and the way different High Schools convert their scores. Your chances probably depend on the competitiveness of the chemistry major and your other qualifications. An upward trend in GPA can only help you. Good luck!
@Brad101 Hey Brad, I hear you. I wonder if schools try to inflate their numbers, and also, they may be reporting weighted GPA numbers. If I had to make an educated guess about UB, I would think that if you are out of state, an unweighted GPA over 3 and an SAT over 1200 would mean auto-accepted. In state would be a little more competitive because of the great deal price-wise. Maybe 3.3 and 1200. I wouldn’t want to discourage you at all … and in some cases, a student’s profile is very appealing. A kid who played varsity sports and has decent grades, or someone who has a bunch of leadership ECs, or someone who went to a tougher HS. My DD was accepted at almost every place she applied to, and I am sure a big part of it was that she was selected to be in the Agriscience and Biotech program at the high school (which allows you to take UCONN ECE courses). This gives them something to look at on the application that stands out. A great essay also can do wonders. Good luck.
Check your portals! My daughters financial aid package was there today!
Wait, where do you check for financial aid stuff?
Yes, you’re right @tlg520 ! ??
Where on the portal was the financial aid info?
@thessaly1 After logging into the UB Student Center Hub, the main landing page shows various items, including the accepted major/department, to do list, personal info, etc. On the left side there is a Financial Aid section. If you click on ‘View Financial Aid’ and select the ‘2020’ year you should see it.
@spqr70nj Thank you! He got a provost scholarship! I don’t even know what that is, but I’m super excited! Has your son narrowed down his selection? Is he still considering UWV? Or is your alma mater tempting him? I wish him luck in his decision!
Log in to myub.buffalo.edu, click to enter the “student center”, under “Financial Aid” click “View”, agree to the terms and conditions, then click aid year 2020. If your financial aid has been calculated, it’ll be there!
Thanks @thessaly1 ! Sounds like our aid packages are the same. We are going to visit Buffalo and West Virginia in two weeks. He wants to check out UB (without dad pressuring him). Lol I told him he should check out those schools that actually showed interest in him and awarded merit scholarships/awards - it’s the least he should do in order to make an informed decision.
@spqr70nj Let me know how the Buffalo visit goes. We won’t be visit until orientation, so I would love to hear his impression of the school. We went over the summer but it would have a totally different atmosphere now. Exciting time for our boys!!
Will do @thessaly1! Summers are great in Western New York. I love to let people know that the week before I graduated many years ago, they had a snow storm in early May. A total fluke, but it happened ??
Hello! I applied December 1st 2018 and I still haven’t received a decision. I’ve emailed and called the school but they just keep telling me that my application is complete and under review. Anyone else still not hear back? Any clue whats wrong?
My daughter is in the same situation as others on this thread. Buffalo requested her mid year grades and we have yet to hear anything. It sounds like admission decisions trickle out at this point - no big announcement date like some other schools. And from last year’s thread, some people didn’t hear until well into April. Its a shame they don’t communicate and tell people they are deferred or on hold.
I just got in yesterday. I’m so happy. This is my dream school.
@lovepreett Congratulations. It really is a great school. My son was accepted for engineering and he’s checking it out next weekend. Hasn’t committed to a school yet. I told him although the school changed since I attended, the focus on academics and student life has increased greatly. I met up two years ago with a bunch of my fraternity brothers and the feeling was so great being back on campus. You will definitely be proud to be a Bull. #HornsUp!
@lovepreett Congrats! I’m so happy for you! Now comes the fun planning!
Would like to ask a question of those who have attended or have often seen UB. Looking at some of the stats, it said that 95% of the students were from NY. That is an extremely small out of state percentage! (We are out of state). Is this mostly from within a few hours drive, or are there a large number of kids from Westchester, Long Island, etc? I ask because we are way out in southern CT, about 6.5 hour drive from UB (without stopping), and I do worry that may be a tough drive to get back and forth, for visits, homesickness, etc.
Also, on the weather … how bad IS it?
@HankCT if you want to PM me happy to discuss. I went to UB and my son is checking out the school again next weekend as he was accepted there for Engineering.
Anyone else get randomly selected to provide verification of income on their financial aid forms? Not sure why if the IRS Data Tool was used to transfer the information.
