Yeah I got selected for verification at both Buff and Umass Amherst. Both were fast at confirming they received the forms when I faxed it to them though
@HankCT I’m from Dutchess County NY and I know many kids who attend UB and love it!! It’s about the same distance from us as well.
@spqr70nj Did you visit yet? Tell all!!
@thessaly1 This weekend! Leaving Friday and have both general and engineering tours set for Monday morning at UB. Plugging in two other schools along the way. Will provide an update upon return.
Did anybody get an email that provides HUB Student Center Account?. They say that my FAFSA cannot be processed because of missing information, telling me that I have to check my HUB account, but, they did not provide me an account.
I;m the parent of a UB alum. I firmly believe that UB is one of the most underrated schools out there. Yes, mostly NY state students as most of the SUNYs are. Binghamton has become more aggressive in seeking OOS students than UB has. I’ve visited both schools, and for myself I’d go with UB due to the city and the off campus offerings as well as the fact that this is a full service university.
Though my son was a New Yorker going there, he knew very few kids from his high school and earlier years at the school. Given the size of the university, unusual, I thought . A lot of international students. He got a great education, personal care there and I was impressed with every department I visited. There is no ceiling to academic difficulty and research at this school that offers a med school, law school as well as PHDs in just about every discipline. Plenty of opportunity there, and I daresay that kids who want it have a better chance of getting it here than at many other universities with stronger name recognition.
@cptofthehouse Well said. As a UB grad and the parent of a son who was recently accepted (he hasn’t decided yet), I concur! UB for me had the perfect balance of what I was looking for compared to other instate NY schools. In fact, if SUNY had a flagship school like other states, I truly believe UB would be it. For years money has been poured into UB to build up their campuses, including medicine, engineering, and sciences to name a few.
so r u guys gonna attend UB
My son is checking out the school Sunday and has an engineering tour on Monday morning. He hasn’t committed yet.
Does anyone know if UB has a co-op opportunity like some other engineer schools do?
Anyone still waiting to hear a decision ? Haven’t heard anything since application placed in mid December
Still waiting, submitted 2Q grades and admissions said it will be a few weeks before notices go out, that was two weeks ago.
I still haven’t heard back and I applied in December.
Hard to believe it is taking so long to hear … ANYTHING !!! Uhhhg
Have anybody applied through EOP?
We just got an updated letter from UB, saying that DD had qualified for a Provost (10K, OOS) merit award. We had initially missed the 12/15/18 merit award cutoff by a few weeks (applied in first week of Jan), and only found out about the 12/15/18 cutoff when the acceptance came back with no merit mentioned. I inquired with UB admissions, and they were extremely helpful and nice, and said they would put her in for consideration and asked us to put in an appeal. Lo and behold, we just got the notification of the award.
This really changes things for us. Currently that puts UB about 5-6K per year more affordable than Binghamton and some of the other schools on the short list (Umass, Clark).
Now the catch: Clark and Umass are 90 minutes from our home. Binghamton is 3.5 hours. UB is 6.5 hours (probably more like 8 hours when you factor in the meals and gas stops and all). The first three schools mean you can leave at dinner time and be home that night. UB would mean losing an entire day to get back and forth.
The other challenge for us is visiting - we’ve never been to the campus due to the distance. The UB admitted student day is on the same day as the UMass admitted student day. This presents an issue. The alternate UB visit day is the one week in April we are away on a pre-planned family vacation. So this means we would need to visit UB as a standard tour … which may or may not be an unfair representation. We’ve only been to one admitted student day so far (at Clark), but my DD found that the admitted student days are a superior way to get a feel for the school and what the other potential inbound students are like.
@HankCT - could you opt to do UB’s admitted student day instead of UMass? Since UB just moved up in the affordability list? Just a thought. We too have not visited UB yet, as it was initially a “backup” school in my daughter’s eyes, but now with all the offers coming in, UB is tops. It’s been hard for my DD to come to terms with this, but now she’s excited to visit on April 20th.
It’s unfortunate that with Spring Break in mid April this year for most high schools, it’s harder to schedule/attend admitted students days. My S19 has visited UB before, but wants to go back for the April 7 day. For him, it’s between UB and one other school. He will get off a plane at midnight from a school trip, sleep at a hotel, and then go. April 20 is out for us as well due to planned vacation. I would say if your daughter is serious about the possibility of attending, she should visit. If that has to be for just a regular tour, then do that. If you contact them they might be able to set up meetings with faculty in her major or arrange for her to attend a class. I agree it still won’t be the same as an admitted student’s day, but you do what you can.
I assume there is no alternate day at UMass that you could do?
@HankCT we just came back visiting several schools upstate including UB. The UB tour was inclusive of admitted students (such as my son) as well as prospective students. Admissions did an excellent job presenting the materials as well as arranging the tour for the area of your child’s intended major. I couldn’t believe how much more housing and additional expansion the university added since my days there. My son was impressed. You do not have to attend the admitted students day - a regular tour will do to see the campus and ask questions. We’ve done this for all of the schools my son has visited including the three we saw the last five days. In fact, next week he’s supposed to revisit Rutgers again and it’s not the ‘admitted students day’ due to a prior conflict.
Congrats on your daughter’s Provost Award…same amount my son received for OOS. ??
The other Umass day has already passed. Umass has two admitted days. The first is half of the majors (not what my child is going for), and the one coming up on the UB day is for her major. We may be able to juggle something. I’m sure at least a visit to UB, if not, UB for admitted day and Umass for a (second) visit - since we’ve already visited once in the late Fall, since it is close.
