University -> CC -> University - How will my previous university's grades weigh in on transferring?

My previous university's grades are pretty horrific. I took a total of 13 classes with a 2.9 GPA and quite a few W's and then decided to withdraw from college and sort my life out. I've since come back to college through the CC system (I moved all the way from the Midwest to California to attend a CC that would better my chances at a California university).

So far things have been good. I have a 4.0 GPA at CC, but of course my previous Uni's 2.9 GPA and W's are still looming over me. I think I can finish out CC with at least a 3.8 GPA (CC) and maybe 3.4-3.6 (overall GPA).

I'm a CS major, and my absolute dream school would be to attend USC at the Viterbi School of Engineering, but I'm really, REALLY afraid that my previous university's scores are going to hold me back from ever making that a reality. My fallbacks would be San Jose State and UC Santa Cruz.

So have I been screwed from the start in terms of USC? Or is there still a chance? Has anyone been in the same boat as me and made it through?

Thanks.

I should mention that at my previous university I never took any CS major courses because I had switched majors from business to CS just before my first quarter at CC.
