Any university with a good program in this field is fine really (saving a conservatory for graduate school), but I'd rather be on the east coast in a major city.

Another question: what city would an aspiring bebop player like me get work in?

I’m not sure about the particulars but you might want to look at Boston College, Boston Conservatory, and Boston University.

Hartt’s Jackie MaClean Institute of Jazz (U.Hartford).

Juilliard.

New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music (NYC; this is NOT the Mannes program).

Have you looked at some of the state programs like Michigan, Indiana, Penn State, U. North Texas?

I’m not that well versed in the best places of study are for the genre and instrument, but these are some that come to mind off the top of my head; not all are university programs, and all are not necessarily within your geographic parameters.

frost school of music in miami i believe has jazz studies (i know they have jazz voice, and where there is that there must be instrumental jazz too!)
