I got my information about this today, and it is just an invitation to apply for the program. I'll quote from the letter...

You are one of a select group of academically talented students admitted to the Class of 2010 whom we have invited to participate in the University College program

It then goes on to invite me to formally apply for the program. Whatever "select group" means is up in the air. Sounds generic to me :/

Just to clarify. I went to an overnight at AU not too long ago and we were asking about the UCP. The people who were in it said that it was great and while u do spend a lot of time with them it isnt all (only one class). Plus with the rooming thing, its like being on a regular floor except you take some trips together, which could be beneficial if u dont no dc very well. and u no ull meet people with ure interests right away. Also, a couple of poeple who got "invited" but didnt do it regreted it and said that it actually seems to be a lot of fun and great for fresh year. Idk just thought id add that in. probably not for everyone but something to consider.

It seems like the most generically named program possible.

I got that exact same message in my letter, but then I got this brochure today that said all freshman are invited to participate and you had to write an essay to apply. I am now massively confused. Does anyone know the deal with this? It sounds really interesting.....

ok they explained all of this at freshman day, so if anyone is still confused here's the deal:

university college is open to all freshman, because you have to apply separately after you are accepted by writing a short essay. some people who got a letter "inviting them" to apply in their acceptance packet probably received this because AU considers them to be very qualified. basically, it offers several different freshman seminars which count for a gen ed credit. you take one of these classes, and everyone in that particular class also lives in a block in the dorms (your roomate will be in your univ college class too). in addition to class time, university college students get the opportunity to go into the city on special tours, visits, etc (sort of like field trips!). so basically, university college is meant to enhance freshman year. it's purpose is to provide a more intimate classroom situation. i hope this helps you guys!

Hey, for those who got the invite/are applying, the literature says the due date for the essay is may10 but on the web it says may 1st. has anyone called or know the real deadline? thanks!

How can it only be for qualified candidates when everyone recieved the invite? That doesnt make any sense...

well, not everyone received the invite. i've talked to several people who were worried because they weren't formally invited. but this "invite" is meaningless; anyone can apply to university college. i have no idea how they decided who got an invite letter and who didn't.

More confusion with this thing....I bit the bullet and wrote the essay. As I submitted my application, the page that came up said that there was an error- that the page had timed out or something else had occured. Did this happen to anyone else?

I talked to the Assistant dean of the honors program and she said that they now think it wasn't such a good idea to give so many people invites to apply for the university college program. The program is designed as a mini-honors program according to them with the professors often being the honors program professors.
