Anyone else here on CC going to University Days this Friday?

going in Nov., but please post how it was, any hints you discovered while there etc. :)

I think there is another CC family that has mentioned that they are taking their child (a daughter??) this Friday.

We’ve never been to “University Days.” Look over the schedule and if there is something that doesn’t interest you, spend that time looking at things that aren’t included in the intinerary.

I don’t know if a visit to the Honors College is included (in Nott Hall); so if it’s not included, I would try to go there for a visit.

If you haven’t already, look at this thread about touring UA
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/789809-ua-campus-tour-tips-3-a.html

Some may not be applicable since you’re going to U Days, but some info should help.

:) Have fun and Roll Tide!

D has been invited to Honors day to meet Dean Sharpe, learn about the honors college, and tour the campus. Has anyone been to this event before? What is the dress for the day? They have 4 or 5 days to choose from, and space is limited according to the invitation. We are going in Nov.

^^^

Ok…I called the Honors College office…according to a VERY reliable source (who may not want to be named…LOL), the dress code for Honors Day is…

…dress comfortable. :)

But…I always say first impressions are lasting…so, I would have my child dress in “nice school clothes” (nothing sloppy/faded/torn/etc)

Be sure to RSVP!

:)

We’ve found the Honors Presentations to be VERY good. Even the Honors Presentations that UA hosts at local hotels are very good (with very good food, too! LOL)

Thanks for the info.
D has been to several “events” the last couple of years that require dressy casual (is that possible?) type attire. I guess I’m always afraid of over dressing than under. I think comfy shoes are the way to go if a campus tour is planned.

I also recommend just wearing nice, comfortable school clothes to events like these. Since UA is in the South, dressing up a little is encouraged. We do have events that specify business casual or business interview dress, but the vast majority of events are not this way. That said, when I see prospective students touring campus, the trend tends to be more of a business casual, but with dark jeans.

Forgot to add to post above…

If your child is interested in CBHP and/or Fellows, encourage your child to introduce him/herself to the directors (firm handshake, confidently stating his/her first and last name ) Dr. Sharpe is big on handshakes. He shakes students’ hands all the time. I think that’s part of his “preparing students for the corporate world” agenda… :)

Make sure your child is prepared to answer any pertinent questions that a director might ask…major…research interests…career goals…

:)

This is probably true…For this event…I think a nice pair of khakis or nice DARK jeans and a nice polo or similar is enough for boys. Girls can wear anything from casual dresses to pants with nice tops, but obviously nothing in poor taste or revealing.

I don’t think shorts are appropriate, though. Besides, it’s getting colder… :)

But Seatide is right, there will be UA occasions when business attire is expected.

Well I’m thinking University Days will be different than Honors days. I am almost positive I can guess my kids dress–Jeans, Converse, T-shirt (probably with a dinosaur on it)…lol We just might stick ok, but thats ok. The way I see it the University needs to impress us. If you see us, come over and say hi!!

^^^

Oh definitely…on UDays, I’m sure you’ll see a catch all of outfits. :)

I think on Honors Days, since some kids are trying to get into CBHP and/or Fellows, those kids might be hoping to have a little “face time” with those directors to make a good impression.

:)

We were very impressed with bama. Choosing a college just became more difficult for my daughter. Now she really likes bama and that other school in Alabama!

Navarre…What was UDay? I’ve never been to one? Was it “rah rah”? Did you get to see the inside of Shelby?

Where all did you go?

Navarre, please post about your University Day! We’re anxious to hear about Bama!

Like Mom said, did you get to see Shelby or the dorms or eat in the cafeteria?

c’mon Navarre - we’re waiting! :)

Ok. The ride into the school was not too impressive but once inside the university it is really nice.

The first 1/2 hour was really rah rah but welcoming and informative. About 6 students came out to the fight song and led the crowd in some cheers, which it seemed everyone knew but us. They did have all the different states stand up to demonstrate the national scope of Bama.

We went to two college information sessions, engineering and Arts and sciences. These were also informative. The sessions basically touched on the highlighs of the colleges, nothing two deep.

When the college sessions were done, we walked over to the stadium for a boxed lunch, which was ok but we were hoping to see what the dining hall food was like.

After eating we went back to the Ferguson building, that is really nice, for some more info. We went to a session on the learning communities. From the way it was presented, the learning communities are a good way to bring like minded students togeter during their first semester of college.

Next, we walked over to the ridgecrest dorms. My daughter was really impressed with how nice the show room was. Those 4 bedroom suites and the buildings are really nice.

Last, we met up with a nice young lady who took us on a little group tour. Basically the tour was a walk around the quad with some info about buildings and history of the university.

That was pretty much it. Like I said, nothing too deep but a really good first impression.

Thanks, Navarre, for the visit post.

What were the different states that were represented?

Did you only walk the campus, or did you take the Crimson Ride?

Was it walkable, or were you ready to keel over from the walk?

Only asking because my husband has had difficulty walking some of the college tours.

Thanks again for the post!

montegut, great question about being walkable! as a side note, even though i wore comfortable shoes on our tour of a very large different university in another state, I had to miss out on the tour as my feet just couldnt do it. We had walked from building to building for various meetings (about 15 min between each) and the prospect of an hour long tour of the entire campus had me running for the hills. So far son has gone to UA tours without me, but has honors day invite and capstone scholars invite that i hope i can go to so i too would like to know if these old feet can handle it.

Mom2college kids. We did not get to go inside the Shelby building. I don’t even think I saw the complex. There was some fact our tour guide mentioned that was really impressive. I think she said, when completed it would be the largest research complex in the nation.

To sum everything up, when you combine the school rankings, scholarships offered, the welcoming attitude of the faculty and students, and the beauty of the school, Bama offers a really nice package.

Most every southern state represented. Other states included Illinois, Ohio and a few others but I can’t recall right now.

As for the walking, we walked ten minutes each way for lunch and the walking tour was about 40 min.
