What is different about these as compared to just going down and having the tour and info session? Since we missed going down two weeks ago because of my daughters mono, we are thinking of going down for this since she would only miss one day of school. Just wondering if this would be a more helpful day to go for to help her make up her mind.

Hi Peg!

How is your DD doing? I hope mono isn’t lingering.

Here’s an agenda for Uday… [University Days - The University of Alabama](http://universitydays.ua.edu/schedule.html)

Since the Feb UDays is for all students (seniors and younger), it looks like it’s designed more for students who haven’t applied yet.

Since your D is an admitted student, I’m wondering if just the normal campus tour, info session, an appt with her dept major, a request to see various housing, etc, would be enough.

What do you think?

:)

Not sure Mom. Our local rep was the one who told us we should go to University Days but I am not seeing why. I am surprised they do not have a regular admitted students day like so many colleges do. We have one next month for ASU here in NJ.

Good question about admitted students day. I’m thinking that because they do 2 UDays in the Fall, a CSDay in January, and 2 UDays in February that they think that’s enough.

Bama is accepting probably 12,000+ students this fall, so they might fear trying to host such an event. Bama is on track of receiving 22,000+ apps this year.

But, for your D, I think a well-planned campus visit would be better - tour, info session, appt with major dept, housing visits, return visit to rec center***

*** Some tour guides barely take their tour into the rec center, therefore I tell people to return on their own and just tell the front desk that you’re visiting and they will let you walk around and look at everything. Be sure to go to the outdoor pool area that is north of the rec center.

Thanks! The rec center would be a big selling point for my dd and the pool is very important. I have to figure this one out. BTW, she is doing great. You would never know she had been so sick such a short time ago. Thanks for asking.

Glad to hear that she’s made a full recovery! :)

There are indoor pools in the rec center.

The outdoor pool area is on the corner, just north of the rec center. It has a pool, a big water-park style slide and a lazy river.

alabama is accepting 12000 students this fall!??! : O

freshman?

that sounds really high!

texas a&m’s freshman class last year was about 8100. the largest in the school’s history.

Many of those 12,000 students will not end up enrolling at UA. UA does not have a 100% yield for its acceptances, so it accepts more than it can hold. That’s why some schools waitlist applicants and others have to put freshmen in forced triples because their yield rate was too high, more people accepted than was predicted. UA is pretty good about predicting their yield, yet we certainly surpassed our goal of 28,000 students with almost 29,000 this year.

oh duh! i *read acceptances but my brain converted it to new freshman! oops.

of course, i know not every acceptance turns into an enrolled student.

my DD will probably be one of them.

It will be interesting how it all works out. If Bama gets 22,000+ apps (it may get more), and only accepts 12,000, then it will have a 55% acceptance rate. Very good.

Of course, Bama is hoping only about 5,000 enroll. Colleges (publics especially), have to way over accept to get the right yield. :)

Mom2, I’m too an admitted student with full ride scholarship and will be in OSU (Columbus) for an interview on 2/12, flying to Louisville (KY) for the weekend, planning to visit Bama on 2/15. I tried booking the regular tour but not available. How should I go about planning for a meaningful campus visit - tour, info session, appt with major dept, housing visits, and return visit to rec center? Should I call the individual departments or is this something the honors department can help? I applied to the CBHP; I doubt I’ll get selected. So, I thought I’ll take advantage of the President Holiday to visit BAMA. Any suggestions?

sms92, m2ck posted a thread about doing your own tour somewhere on this board, but as you mentoned, visit your colleges of interest, the honors dorms, Lakeside Dining, and the Rec Center. UA does have iTour Bama which you could use as you tour campus [iTour Bama - The University of Alabama](http://itour.ua.edu/) . The honors college can help you with a lot of the scheduling, but I’d recommend contacting the departments you are interested in directly. Depending on what you want to do, it is possible to visit classes, speak with professors, or even spend the night with a current student. Start contacting UA now as to get the ball rolling and to schedule times to meet with professors and academic deans.

*planning to visit Bama on 2/15. I tried booking the regular tour but not available. *

Monday’s tours are already all booked? hmmm…

Well, keep checking the online tour system because people do cancel or change dates. Also, Bama has told me that people sometimes forget to cancel their tours or show up with less people then their reservation, so show up at the Student Services office early that morning and be put on the waiting list. Then come back about 15 minutes before the tour time and see if you can get a spot.

Also…call Jami Gates at the Honors College and she can probably arrange some kind of tour for you (tell her that you’re coming in from Calif and the regular tours are booked).

jami gates 205-348-5599 (Frankly, I think Bama needs to increase the number of tours per day. Just offering 2 tours a day isn’t enough anymore - since the number of people is limited by the number of seats on the little bus they use.

Also find out if you can “sit in” on some honors classes. If you need some suggestions, let me know.

Here’s the tour tips thread… http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/789809-ua-campus-tour-tips-3-a.html

Thanks SEA_tide & Mom2. I suspect 2/15 is University Day, maybe there is no campus tour. That date has been “booked” weeks ago.

Oh pooh! Feb 15 is a UDay!..

Well, still contact Jami and tell her your situation. She should be able to arrange something since you’ll be coming in from Calif.

:)

There is a University day on that day. If you want to pay the $15 a person, you could attend that, but the day will probably be geared towards hs students who haven’t applied to UA yet. Just because you can’t take the official tour doesn’t mean that you can’t still do everything else. You traveling a long ways and happen to be in the area. Professors are often their best on Mondays and everything is open. I apologize if you’ve posted this before, but what is your intended major?

Thanks for the “Monday” tip. I plan to major in Microbiology.

Definitely see what Jami can arrange for you. Tell her about your intended major (are you pre-med also?), and that you’ll want to see Shelby and the new Science Complex.

And, look over the campus tour tips thread.

Let us know what she can do for you, and then we can figure out what you still need to be shown…

I’m thinking you’ll need to see…

Shelby and the science complex
The Ferg
The Honors College
Honors housing - Ridgecrest South and at least Riverside (including the BBQ, gazebos and pool area of Riverside)
Gorgas Library & the Quad area
Rec Center - and outdoor pool complex
Student Health Center
Various dining venues - Lakeside, Fresh Food, Food court, Burke, etc…
if interested…sorority row

hmmm…what else???

Mom2ck, you’re amazing!! You’re a walking dictionary for Bama. I emailed Ms Gates, lets see what she comes up with.
