University Democrats

Political apathy is so hot right now! ;)

I went to college, thinking i'd get involved with one of the political groups, signed up for the e-mails and such, but found out that there were things I liked more than politics, especially at UVA where life seems fairly politicized (but maybe its just the circles I run in, i know others disagree). As my little brother(who goes to tech) put it, earlier this year, at UVA there are people standing outside the dining hall asking you to fill out an absentee ballot form, at tech there are people asking you to take a "marroon effect" t-shirt.

Long story short, don't do any organization because you want to be part of the biggest most influential group on campus, if that's what makes you happy, go for it, but i'd like to express my deepest condolences.

If you like politics, then go for it!

IN reference to the CR's being small, i'd just like to say this: Groups like QAA were probably small and laughed at once, and membership came with a great deal of embarrasment/social problems. . . if you care about something, do it, even if it doesnt fit the typical UVA mold of helping you rise to the top and maybe get a lawn room some day.

Do StudCo or CLAS representative or ANBODY I vote for actually do stuff? If they do, how come I don't hear about it?

When I vote, I usually look like the candicates' names. Whoever has the least lame name gets my vote. Most of my friends vote in similar ways. Yea, the winner can put the position on his/her resume. Good for you, hooray!

i mean--the problem with studco is that...i don't know what they really do. i don't know what anyones job on studco is. I don't even know what they plan on doing when they get there. People who run for studco, and are serious about it, just make some flyers and table the lawn, or make a facebook group that says "vote for me, i'm a cutey."

Oh and when people almost force you to vote at newcomb while they stand over your shoulder, i find that incredibly ludicrous.

StudCo doesn't do anything. They've been really unproductive the past few years, and their aims are usually vague.

Long Island Mom here. My son is very politically involved, liberal democrat. With UVa in the south is that a problem. Very southern feel and attitude? Someone told he to keep him away from UNC.
Any idea numbers of NYers?

There are plenty of northerners here (I'm one of them :)). Some locals actually complain about the NYCers.

While UVA is said to be less liberal than other schools, by definition, colleges and univesities are liberal. The students are probably a little closer to center than the average American college student.

Charlottesville overall is very liberal. Our county overwhelmingly votes democratic.

Yes, Charlottesville is very Democratic/liberal. UVA I would say is a very moderate school, but there are lots of liberals. I am from New York City and there are not MANY but there is a sizeable number of people from the New York City/ Westchester/ Long Island, Northern Jersey, Connecticut area. I am very politically active, liberal democrat. UVa doesnt really have a southern feel or attitude. There are many northerners especially from Maryland and Northern Virginia which isnt the south by any means. I dont consider it a southern school at all. UNC is a little more southern in culture definitely.

If you have questions, I can speak to your son privately or you can visit and I can host him and show him around/talk/and prove that I had the same concerns and they were proven to be false.

Thanks a lot Bklyn2Cornell. It wounds like my son will be a great fit in every way. He'll be the first to sign up for the Democratic club and be very involved.
On another note.... It is important to go to a top school to get in and get $ for grad school. Anyknowlege (I'd think UVa fits that very well).
How hard is it to get good grades. My son is a great student, very organized. I hear it is tough to get even a "B" at Berkeley. Do most students do well "and get the grades they deserve and are used to?
Thanks.

OK Eugene.. One more question for now. No anti-semetism? No one looking for horns? Not to hard to find other Jewish kids (if he wants to)?
On one Berkeley post it someone asked about seeing a post about picking out the Jewish guys by their noses. Turned me off, again!
