University Fellows Experience Semi-Finalists

Has anyone received word yet that they are a University Fellows Experience semi-finalist, and if so, what the approximate date of the phone interviews will be this year?

I applied but have not heard anything yet.

We’re supposed to find out on February 1st

I actually just talked to Stephanie Brewer and the decisions are supposed to come out sometime next Friday the 18th

Phone interviews will be Jan 22nd and 24th. (Tuesday and Thursday)

FYI, there are over 800 qualified applicants this year. Good luck to everyone that is vying for a Fellows invitation.

When I talked to the office, I was told that just under 600 applied & about 200 would get to the semi-finals

Does anyone have any idea what to expect from the interviews? If the decisions are snail mailed on the 18th, that doesn’t give much time to prepare for the interview if you are a semifinalist.

The semifinalist interviews are pretty casual, by phone, and aren’t really something one can prepare for ahead.

Well this is interesting. I just spoke with Ms. Brewer, who told me that the notification would be happening 2 ways. The applicants who made the short list and will be doing phone interviews will be notified via email. Those who did not will get letters in the mail. Everyone should know by sometime next week.

For what it’s worth, as amazing as this program is, there are so many applicants and so few spots that we’ve been keeping our eyes open for other similar opportunities. It seems to me that combining AA and Emerging Scholars would give an interesting program as well. That’s what’s great about Alabama…so many opportunities for our kids! Best of luck to all who applied!

^^^Txdoula, a friend of ours is doing just that, AA and Emerging Scholars. She also does something where she reads to kids every week. She is very busy, but loves giving back to the community. So proud of her!

Last year, D received notice of not being selected for interview the day before we left to go to Capstone Scholars Day. At first, it put a damper on the weekend, but D really, really enjoyed the trip anyway. Sounds like the timing this year is similar to last year.

Is there any information out regarding AA for next year? I can’t find anything

It’s too early for AA and OA. That info comes out later. I highly recommend planning to do one of them.

Sorry not sure I know what these two programs are.

AA = Alabama Action

[Alabama Action | Honors College](http://honors.ua.edu/alabama-action/)

Alabama Action has two parts. One is school based, the other is called Focus First and involves quite a bit of travel.

OA = Outdoor Action

[Outdoor Action | Honors College](http://honors.ua.edu/outdoor-action/)

Both of these are excellent opportunities. Applications aren’t out yet, but I believe it’s on a first come basis. Students participating in either move in a week before other freshmen who are not participating in early activities. :slight_smile: Both of these programs are for students in the Honors College.

Here’s a new program open to all incoming freshmen: Camp 1831

http://fye.ua.edu/tcamp.cfm

http://fye.ua.edu/campAbout.cfm

I guess I should clarify about the two parts of Alabama Action. Both Alabama Action and Outdoor Action are one week programs which are taken for credit through the HC. Students who participate in Alabama Action choose between the school based service project or Focus First. Both of these options are components of Alabama Action and run during the same week. Focus First involves traveling with FF leaders around the state of Alabama and performing vision health screenings. Students are in small groups with FF and the groups change throughout the week.

Bamagirls, when do applications for those programs open?

Txdoula, the form for AA was available 2/2 last year.

Thank you! We will check these out.

Pardon me if this has been answered somewhere already - at work on phone - but does anyone happen to know if either OA or AA conflict with marching band camp? Thanks!
