I am VERY interested in this program. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might make my application stronger? I attend the Alabama School of Math and Science, take a challenging course load, and have a 4.0 unweighted. I have many extracurriculars, including varsity sports and leadership positions. I meet the minimum ACT requirements also (34.)

If anyone has any suggestions on how I could stand out, I would really appreciate it. If you are currently in the program I would LOVE to talk to you, if you would PM me?

My son was selected for the Fellows program at Alabama last year--which was the first year of the program. Over 450 candidates qualified and 42 were offered a fellowship. This year over 750 qualified for consideration and it is anticipated that fewer than 40 will be offered a fellowship. The selection process is difficult to assess as many NMF (National Merit Finalists) did not make the final cut. My son declined the offer and is attending another university. Alabama's University Fellows Program is amazing & my son turned down invitations from two Ivies (one for a fly-in & the other to apply) as he preferred Alabama's Honors College & University Fellows Program, but was admitted to his first choice school unexpectedly after withdrawing his ED (early decision) application supplement. The University Fellows Program is leadership & community service oriented. Leadership in the sense of "making a difference" as opposed to winning a popularity contest. My advice is to just be yourself & show interest in Alabama & the Honors College. It is still one of the three best kept secrets in higher education honors colleges.(On CC a few of the worst honors colleges/programs get almost all of the publicity).

My guidance counselor seemed to imply that I wouldn't have what it takes because I haven't submitted any type of research as a junior. Is that really required? My time is consumed by the two different clubs I run and the community service board I am a member of.

Also, is it possible to double major while in the fellows? Alabama will accept most of my Latin credits (5 years worth) and my math and science credits. I would love to go in majoring in Classics and Biology.

Research is not required. Your guidance counselor may be confusing University Fellows with the CBHP (computer based honors program) which involves research. Of course, you can double major.

Just do what you can. From where you are, its most likely pretty much random chance with the current numbers. Keep the work up and hope for the best.

Icy: Being NMF in no way guarantee's you entrance. Personally I actually think that NMF is a whole load of bull. There're how many of us? We did well on one test? That said it is pretty easy to assess. Numbers change year to year, but are relatively stable per state and from semi you are basically guaranteed finalist.
