Im in grade 11 and i just realized that this time next year im going to be applying for universities. Problem is i have no idea how any of this works or where i wanna go or could even get accepted. I thought this would be the last year id ever have to take math but apparently its mandatory in uni? I also have no clue how the credit thing works. I want to major in english and minor in sociology/criminology but would i have to take courses that arent either of those to be considered a full time student?? The only school i know i want to apply for is University of Calgary because my grandma worked there and id also love to go somewhere in California but i know i need backup schools and i dont know how to find ones that are a match for me and that would accept me. Also in Canada (or at least Ontario) we dont do GPA so how would the school figure out my GPA if i went to a school outside of the country?? Im just really confused and kinda stressed out so if anybody wants to take the time to try and explain to me how the heck university works and help answer my questions id appreciate it a lot. Thanks so much! And of course 10 points if you help me :)x

Alas, we don’t get points on here for helping :)

Find out who the school college admissions counsellor/teacher is. If that’s not so easy speak to your form/year teacher and ask. Make an appointment to see them saying you don’t know anything about the process or college itself.

Within Canada, colleges will be used to students from every province. Even in the US, thousands of Canadians study there annually. The problem with the US is the cost of college. As an international student, the fees are much higher than for local students. You need to speak to your family about how they/you are going to fund it. Your province/Canada will have some sort of loan/grant system so it should be doable if you had to fund 100% yourself. Any help from family is brilliant and should be seized with both hands.

Math in college- someone explained to me the other day that this needn’t be an actual math or science class like in high school. It might be a class in how math is used in society or more practical applications. So don’t panic. This information will be on each university’s website.

Have a play around with the CC search engine:

You can search by major, location (including Canada) and lots of other things you want to start thinking about- city, town or rural? Big on sports? Want a particular club? Dorms or house share?

Good luck!
You can also get help on the Canada section of the International Forum here too.

California is a nice place to visit, but . . . . .
as an international student it would be very expensive for you. The state universities are impacted. Scholarships are very few and far between for only the best candidates and those are not guaranteed. You could try the private schools.
Canada has great universities, look into them for what you’d like to do.
