what are the benefits of living in the university housing apartments instead of the westwood apartments? is it just the increased security and the fact that you don't have to pay for utilities? or.... is there more?

i have friends in university housing and they tell me that overall its cheaper unless you're like some of my friends that cram ppl in past the maximum allowance to split the cost in some westwood apts, and also university housing are furnished and utilities are included in costs, and any maintenance is taken care of instantaneously, whereas its a c##pshoot for random westwood apts and depends on some random landlord and could take forever even if theyre nice. im hoping to get an early enough sign up time next year to get into the university housing but i doubt i will because of my year

Because of your year? Is it difficult to get a spot in uni housing if you're a freshman? Are uni housing like, a grad student thing?

My friends have had a bad experience with univ. apartments - mold in the room, having to move out etc. I'm not quite sure how univ apartments work though.

Well, here's the link to the costs:
2007-2008 Undergraduate University Apartment Rates

As everyone knows, the rent is cheaper ($450+) because there are "chores" that you have to do. I don't know the exact conditions, but you have to work maybe around 3-4 hours a week, in cleaning up, cooking, preparing meals, etc. Someone else can clarify that. However, you do get 19 meals a week.

I would think it's slightly difficult for prospective 2nd years to get Univ. Apts.

Yeah, it's a mixed bag with apartment managers/landlords. For instance, mine was just fired. She was flaky, was never there during her "office hours" and just plain sucked. As for our new one, he's practically always available and well, he's taking care of a lot of bureaucratic stuff that the old manager left. I had a sublet at 512 Veteran and well, our bathroom wasn't repaired for like, 3 weeks or something bizarre. Anyway, it sucked.
Grad student housing is Weyburn Terrace. It's on Weyburn and Gayley / Weyburn and Veteran.

you're thinking of the co-op, which is not university owned.

the university apartments are just like regular apartments, except your landlord/manager is UCLA instead of a private individual. the only "chores" you have to do are the ones you want to depending on your personal level of neatness/cleanliness.

How does parking work for students living in university owned apts?

zomg. ze super jlai!

does ANYONE know how parking works?

Post a question on UCLA Housing forum.

dude. get your own apartment.

university apartments are crowded. dirty. euper expensive for what you get.

i pay $800 for my own room AND a parking space. and i get to use my own furniture. and choose my roommates. and kick them out if they suck.

trust me.

the problem is, i dont need a parking space because i dont have a car :( and i don't have any furniture because all of it is in chicago :(. i'd buy some, but i don't know where i'm ending up after graduation... so yeah.

we can't use our own roommates in the university apartments?

CraigsList. I bought some of my stuff just before I moved in. I'm going to sell it again when I finally move out (when I graduate in other words). Anyway, around the end of August or beginning of September, you can find some deals of UCLA students moving out. Shouldn't be too much of an issue as long as you can live minimalistically.

Ah oops: I was thinking you meant $800 studio! :p

no dude i wouldnt want to see an $800 studio in westwood. i cant even imagine how gross that would have to be.

but still. my place is pretty nice and its cheap. it's doable.

and i second craigslist. or the facebook marketplace. or sidewalks. for furniture/etc.

allie r u still in westwood? how u doin? hows that job?!?

yeah.

meh. not very well lately.

and sigh. hate.

quarter life crisis of epic proportions. you have no idea.

i second allie. any room that costs only 800 near ucla should raise red flags everywhere

and to finally answer that one impatient dudes post- ITS A LOTTERY SYSTEM FOR JUST PPL IN THAT APTMNT

further clarfication:

room for $800- perfectly ok.

studio for $800- run.
