<p>Any predictions as to when Illinois will announce its 2010-2011 cost increase? Any predictions as to how much it will be? Will we know before May 1?</p>

<p>Very few students found it anti-anything. Just a funny satire on a tempest in a teapot. Other schools with similar issues just lack the creativity to do a video and song about it. You want dullsville go to UI. You want fun and wit–go to UW. Also the home of The Onion and numerous funny filmakers. (Airplane, Naked Gun, etc.)</p>

<p>Even the now famous Staurday Night Live was a direct ripoff of Kentucky Fried Theater which was the comedy troop founded by the Zuckers and Jim Abrahams. Lorne Micheals saw their show which had moved from Madison to LA and pitched the idea for the show to NBC.</p>

<p>Other films by those guys included Ruthless People and Ghost which made them, very very rich.</p>

You can remain in denial all you want. Even UW faculty admits the term ‘coastie’ is used as a pejorative at UW, though not at other midwest schools.</p>

The term coastie was likely coined in Madison in the last 15 years, said Eric Raimy, a UW-Madison assistant professor of the English Language and Linguistics.</p>

<p>He said other universities in the Midwest use the term, but usually to describe students from the coasts. In Madison, he said, the term is used as a pejorative to describe women with “more Hollywood-esque cultural attributes to them” but the song injects a Jewish component that can’t be ignored.

‘They say it’s just a funny song, but obviously it’s come to be much more than that,’ said Michelle Langer, a sophomore from Milwaukee.</p>

<p>Some Jewish students object to the song’s references to a ‘Jewish American Princess’ and ‘My east coast Jewish honey’ who wastes her father’s money. Greg Steinberger, executive director of Hillel at UW-Madison, a Jewish group, said it was unseemly for Harrison and Grefe to profit from a song ‘made to purposely make fun of and hurt their neighbors.’

<p>UW has a history of anti-semitism, and the reason why didn’t really become clear until I read Nobel Prize, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and National Medal of Science winner Milton Friedman’s account of his experience at UW:

Friedman: We went out to Wisconsin on a visiting arrangement for a year, the University of Wisconsin’s Department of Economics. I got embroiled in the center of an internal dispute. It really was quite a storm. There was a conflict. There was a business school that was trying to take over the economics department, and there was a dean of the arts and sciences who was trying to improve what he thought was a mediocre economics department. He offered me a tenured position at Wisconsin and I accepted it. But then, all hell broke loose. The people of the business school and some of the people in the economics department started to complain about how this arrogant dean was trying to force me down their throats, and I was just this young brash man from New York, and he was offering me a higher salary. I think it was all of – what was it – $2,600 a year? I think that was it. Maybe it was $3,000. It was that order of magnitude. He was offering me that, and that was higher than they were paying somebody else. So anyway, as I say, the real thing that was happening was a dispute between the economics department and the school of business. But I became the center of it, and it also involved elements of anti-semitism. In Wisconsin, this was in 1940, when the war had started in Europe, but not here. Wisconsin, as you know, had a large German population and there were a number of people in the economics department who were very strong sympathizers with Germany. And as is not surprising, I was not, and I spoke it very openly, my belief that the United States ought to go to war on the side of the Allies. So at any rate, that got involved. When it got to that point, I quit. I asked the dean to withdraw my name from consideration and quit. Nonetheless, that was a very traumatic experience. I have since been involved in similar public disputes, but that was the earliest and the defining one, if I may say so, for me.

<p>You need to get UW’s admin to address their campus’s intolerance, xenophobia, and deeply-rooted anti-semitism problems.</p>

<p>Also I’d worry about the U Illinois budget which appears to be in much worse shape and not receiving funds allocated to it.</p>

<p>The question is what’s wrong with UI that a neighboring state with 1/10th the Jewish population currently and always has attracted so many MORE Jewish students?</p>

<p>Jiff–you are too much. Some would say obsessed. Wisconsin hired many Jewish professors that Harvard and Princeton would not due to anti-semitism that was widespread in higher education as well as recruiting Jewish kids from New York that were shut out of the IVy schools until well after the 40’s. If Friedman was ill-treated by some conservatives in the B school that was unfortunate but UW was a leader in that era of equal opportunity for Jews in both faculty and students.</p>
