University in Dublin

Hello,

I still have a year or two before I should be seriously thinking about universities - but in any case, one of the options I was considering was going to university in Dublin. Therefore, I'm wondering if any of you have any information on the universities in Dublin - the three main ones being Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, and Dublin City University.

I'm fairly experienced with DCU as I've spent the last two summers in a three week programme attending college-level courses while residing on DCU campus. I know that they have good computer lab facilities and apparently offer a good education in economics, but apart from that and a first-hand experience with campus life in DCU, that's as far as my knowledge goes. DCU hasn't got a great rep, probably because it's a fairly new university and it's located in the northside of Dublin; both UCD and TCD are located in the southside, and are (in my opinion) more conveniently located.

I'm wondering if anyone has any information on how these schools fare in the areas of computer science and software engineering. I haven't quite decided what my major will be yet, but I'm leaning towards computer science, and at the very least, I know it's going to be something to do with computers. I have my eye trained on UCD and DCU in particular - although TCD is the most reputable university (or so they say), I haven't heard anything especially positive about their computer science program.

UCD is largely a "grey area" to me - I have no idea how good its computer science/software engineering courses are. If anyone has any information, that would be grand!

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I went to UCD for my undergraduate. Although it was not in computers (Sociology & Spanish) it was a great uni. My cousin did computers there and got several internships with large corporations such as Microsoft.

The uni has a great reputation in Ireland and many of the most eminent people in Irish society have gone there. There has been some change at the uni in the past few years and the new president has brought the uni more inline with the USA system. People can take optional courses outside their majors.

Regarding international rep I got into most of the postgraduate courses I applied to in the UK (Cambridge, LSE, King's College, Edinburgh) so the rep can't be that bad.

Any questions you have I would be happy to answer.
