Would love to hear info from current/former students about this school, or parents of current/former students.

My son’s GF goes there. What do you want to know? I could ask her.

Class size, dorm life, student life, ie clubs, public transportation, safety, professors versus TA’s teach, advising, helpfulness of administration when problems arise, campus food. Anything I can learn beyond looking on the internet.

Also interested to hear from parents as to their dealings with the university.

Thanks so much!

I’ll ask her the questions and hopefully she’ll have some good answers. :)

Like UA, UAB is a better school now than in the past. UAB has a much smaller undergraduate student body, but a larger graduate program.

I understand that there are plans to make the campus more green, which is great, cause it sure needs it! I can’t imagine anyone going to UAB if they want to experience traditional college life. But, perhaps the future changes to the campus will change my mind. Bham in the Southside is a great part of town. Highland Avenue is gorgeous, fun, and affordable! But UAB simply does not compare to the experience available at UA. Im sure some would like that, but not me. Give me those beautiful old buildings, columns, trees, huge quad, the Black Warrior River, the cultural opportunities, and tradition rich football at UA!

My son’s GF (I think) would prefer to be at UA, but because of her stats, she got a better scholarship at UAB (it’s no longer offered). She enjoys going to the UA football games and has complained that “no one goes to the UAB football games”.

My pre-med son hopes to go to med school at UAB (fingers crossed).

Not a current student or parent, but UAB was in heavy contention for a while for my DD so maybe our thoughts will help.

UAB has an incredible health sciences program; that was the initial attraction. We have close friends in Birmingham and UAB’s health programs are well regarded. There has been a lot of money invested in the facilities in the past few years (there were some newer dorms and the recreation was unbelievable: what an amazing rock climbing wall & lazy river!) DD liked the honors syllabus that she got to see while she was touring the honors building.

It is in a more urban environment than most traditional college settings, but it still feels like it is a separate entity.

What eventually cut UAB from DD’s list? The fact that it is a heavy commuter school (I think 7,000 students live on campus, but a lot go home for the weekend); DD’s waning desire for a health science career; and for me, the comment during a honors preview program that my kid could be a TA by her sophomore year. While it would have been great experience for my DD, I didn’t necessarily think that lower level undergrads should be TA’s. Also, their low 4 year graduation rate (which I don’t necessarily think is a reflection on the school per se, but on the fact that it is a heavy commuter school) and their lower incoming freshman stats compared to other schools on DD’s radar.

I think it’s a great school for a number of programs; it just ended up not being the right school for DD.

Good luck!

^^^

Probably a good analysis. DS2 would have probably gotten a higher scholarship from UAB, but we felt he would want the “full college experience” that he’d get at Bama.

However, when (fingers crossed) he goes to UAB for med school, those issues won’t be important.

Will be interviewing for the honors programs at UAB the weekend after Capstone, so will be a great comparison. Hope to drive through Tuscaloosa on the way back to NO so we can have a side by side look at the two.

So glad interviews are available on the weekend. If anyone else here has applied for the honors program and gets an interview, act fast so you can get a good time.

montegut, will see you at both! looks like the next few months may get busy

montegut…

I gave your questions to my son to ask his GF about her experiences at UAB. He’s with her this evening, so hopefully I’ll have some answers later. :)

She’s pre-pharm. She’ll won’t actually graduate from UAB, because she has to transfer at some point into the PharmD program at either Auburn or Samford. I don’t know why UAB doesn’t have PharmD - it would seem logical to me.

Seems like a lot of state schools are very careful to not overlap.

Like, in Louisiana, the only place you can get biomedical engineering is Louisiana Tech. So you have to drive five hours to an instate school, so might as well go to an out of state school if you get similar aid. Of course, Tulane still has BME, but that’s a lot different than Louisiana Tech.

UAB boasted the only biomedical engineering program in Alabama, so if you want that specific major, have to go there.

Glad to hear Samford also has PharmD. Of course, that’s not a public, so I guess that’s why there’s a choice there. Heard it’s a wonderful school.

I saw that there are no scholarships available for transfer students to Bama. Is it the same for Auburn? You mentioned your son’s GF has such a good scholarship to AUB. Hope she’ll be able to get some type of scholarship when she transfer to Samford or Auburn.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to visiting both UAB and Bama in the coming weeks.

Both my father and uncle went to UAB for medical school in the 70’s. My sister did some graduate coursework there as well. They all enjoyed their experience. Actually my uncle was the class above the current Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin but didn’t know her well. Best of luck to your son Mom2kids! Happy New Year Y’all!!
