University of Alabama Huntsville

Does anyone go there? Can someone give me more info, such as how are the academic and life there? Hows the honors college? Do top kids get a lot of attention (research opportunities, internships, etc) I’m planning on majoring in Aerospace Engineering. I’d be able to get the full tuition scholarship (4.1W GPA, about 1450 SAT (cr+math)). I hope to be employed in the Department of Defense, specifically the Missile Defense Agency.

advice don’t go there. Go to embry riddle or maybe some Service Academy where they usually specialize in Engineering and tuition is free

Why not go there? It’s in a prime location…I heard Embry Riddle isnt that great for aerospace engineering, better for aerospace science. And I don’t want to join the military…the physical requirements scare me xD

Other schools I’m looking at are the UCs (in state), UMich, GT, UIUC, Purdue

UAH is the perfect school for aerospace. Huntsville is like the aerospace/defense capital of the world. They have plenty of established connections. Redstone Arsenal has plenty of DoD jobs available to new graduates. If you change your mind and don’t want to work for the government then you can be employed by leading private sector companies like Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, etc.

my son a senior in hs, just finished a nasa summer internship (housing was at UAH), campus was nice, dorms were nice. a number of the people he worked with at nasa (Marshall) (engineers etc)had received their degrees (undergrad and phd levels) from UAH and spoke very highly of the school

Thanks guys. UAH is sounding better and better :)

I live rather close to UAH. Huntsville is known as Rocket City. UAH is a growing school…lots of money is being poured into the school with new buildings, etc. A few years ago, UAB added some very nice residence halls and also built sorority and frat row for those who want to be Greek.

Because of its proximity to Cummings Research Park (the #2 research park in the nation - #1 is Silicon Valley), UAH students have plenty of opportunities for research and internships. There are also “co-op” opportunities for student to work as “student engineers” at major companies who pay them a salary plus pay their tuition.

Lots of kids go there because it has great engineering, comp sci, business, nursing, science, etc. It’s not as highly ranked as Auburn or UA, but that’s mostly because its “depth” is more concentrated in a several majors rather than across a host of majors (as at Auburn or UA).

So, if your major is a high-tech one or a business one…UAH is good.

One consideration…if you don’t want to join the Greek system, you might want to get involved in some other school organization.

UAH as a whole may not be ranked as high as Auburn or UA, but I know their engineering program is ranked higher than UA’s. It may be higher than Auburn’s too.

If you are majoring in business, then UA trumps both UAH and Auburn. Not only our business school but there are great opportunities to explore your entrepreneurship qualities as well through our Alabama Innovation and Mentoring of Entrepreneurs Center.

UAprophet…where are the stats for engineering rankings of UA, Auburn, and UAH (with UAH possibly on top)? I’m not saying that such stats don’t exist…I’m just wondering where they do exist.

Thanks.

I think it was from US News and…etc. I had a full list a few years ago when I was applying to college. The complete best graduate school rankings are available online but it is possible they may be different from undergraduate rankings.

Also, all my teachers, counselors, advisors, mentors, whatever and other people told me that Auburn had a stronger engineering program than UA. This isn’t surprising considering their COE is larger and has more engineering majors and specialties. UA is still more known for our business versus engineering/technical/heavy sciences.

^^^
You said that UAH’s engineering is ranked higher than UA’s…that’s what I’m questioning. And, I doubt that UAH’s COE is bigger than UA’s. Yes, Auburn’s is bigger…for now…don’t know if it will always be since UA has been far more aggressive than Auburn has.

I know that UAH’s engineering is good…it’s right next to Cummings Research Park…and I was on the campus this morning…LOL

I am currently an undergrad at UAH’s COE. I am majoring in Aerospace here because after a year of research this was the perfect fit. I’m not sure of your situation but I came directly out of the military and cost was an issue. I finished up about half of a Professional Aeronautics degree with Embry Riddle and I think that UAH is plain and simple just better. ERAU is expensive and you can’t get the hands-on experience that you can here. I work for the Missile Defense Agency right now as a student engineer (YP-0899-01) and love it. Companies here are starving for fresh talent and they are willing to pay a premium for. The MDA in particular is great because of salary, flexible hours, training courses, travel, benefits…everything. The process was a long and tedious one including getting a renewed security clearance but nothing that you can’t handle. I already had a SECRET clearance and it still took some time to get it done. My decision to come here was easy because the University of Florida and ERAU just couldn’t match the Co-op program. Coming here and doing a Co-op while in school really places you so much farther ahead of other students when you graduate.
