Please do not make the mistake I made in coming here for grad school (at least for physics). The physics department is a MESS.
The professors DO NOT care about their students. They only care about doing their own research and do not even show up for posted office hours. Emails will go unanswered. Phone calls unreturned. Do not expect to ever find a Professor in his office or available to help you. In three semesters I could not get an advisor or even engage anyone on the prospects of advising. There is no orientation, no degree plan, no direction toward you getting your degree.
I taught three lab sections and 90% of the undergrad students complained to me about their professor. Same complaints as mine, also that the professor would refuse to even help them with their homework questions. This is the most apathetic faculty I have ever seen. Students told me they wished I had been the professor instead.
A professor in another department told a friend of mine, who was an undergrad, not to expect to be taught anything at this school… this is a research school only and they care about funding dollars not educating students.
There was also an ugly split this past year with half of these professors going and starting their own department (Space Science). The split was very bad for students and many other grad students I talked with expressed fear and dismay for their own prospects. I left this university and will not return. My grades were mostly okay so I at least have a good chance at another university. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
