University of Alabama or University of South Carolina

Hi!

I'm having a really difficult time deciding between the University of Alabama and the University of South Carolina and would greatly appreciate some outside input. I plan on majoring in Economics and am an out of state student from Virginia. I know that Alabama is about $6,000 cheaper (OOS) and is ranked higher for both public universities and business programs but I've heard great things about South Carolina as well, especially since they will have a brand new business building for next year. I have visited both schools and loved both of the campuses for different reasons so neither separated itself from the other. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Be forewarned: On this site there are many more Bama fanatics (myself included) that there are in the South Carolina camp. Take advice with a grain of salt and go where you feel most comfortable.

That said, it seems like if all things are even, then cost is going to be the biggest factor to consider. Are there budget limits that exist? (I.E: Can your parents afford either one?) Which school will offer you the most in scholarship aid?

Thanks for the advice, I will! My parents are able to afford both but would obviously prefer to pay the lesser, especially since I plan on going after an MBA.

What are your stats? Do you qualify for any merit awards from Bama? Do you qualify for the Honors College?

USC gives horrible merit compared to Bama. I would get 2/3rds tuition at Bama, but only $500 /yr at USC.

Teenbodybuilder, is that the Woodrow Scholars award or the Sims Scholars award? Both come with a reduce tuition rate. The Woodrow Scholars award reduces OOS tuition by about 1/2.

Bama has better merit, but for an OOS state flagship University, USC isn’t bad.

Woodrow Scholars Award
Annual value: $500 + reduced tuition rate
Four-year value with tuition reduction: more than $50,950

Sims Scholars Award
Annual value: $500 + reduced tuition rate
Four-year value with tuition reduction: $33,470

My dd was accepted to both. Got the Presidential at Bama and the Coopers at USC. She ended up at USC because she wants to get her PharmD and Bama doesn’t have a pharmacy school. She is very happy with her decision. She has friends at Bama that are also very happy with their decisions! Dd is in honors at USC. I do think that USC Honors is much more selective. 14 of her 17 hours are honors classes with less than 30 students. Her friend at Bama is also in honors and only has one honors class first semester. USC room and board is also a bit cheaper. Both schools have a bit o a shortage for upperclassmen housing. USC is a bit more urban. Both are beautiful campuses and I have heard both schools have good advising and really care about their students. Good luck

South Carolina’s top-ranked international business program might be a consideration for you if you are interested in majoring in Econ and going on for an MBA.

It is either Woodrow or Sims. I haven’t applied just looked on the site. I didn’t see the reduced tuition part, what is the reduced tuition? I have a 1340 M+CR SAT and a ~3.5uw/~4.0w GPA
