University of Alabama vs. Cal Poly SLO

Im having trouble deciding between the two. Both are very nice schools.
Which one would you choose for yourself and why?
I am going to be a Graphic Arts major.

:(|)

Is there a cost difference? If so, I would choose the less expensive option. Use the money saved for art supplies and expenses you’ll face as a senior when job hunting.

i have to make the same decision

i would go for graphic arts at cal poly if i was you

Both schools are very good. What’s the cost difference? Where to you “feel it” more? Would you prefer to live in the South or the West after graduation? One obviously does not need to live in the same region as their school after graduation, but internships/coops and job recruiting will often be regional. So you are at least a little more likely to end up working/living in that region. Good luck!

What is your Cost to Attend both? Are you instate or OOS for SLO? If you have the Presidential Scholarship at Alabama that is tough to beat. If you do not have Presidential at Bama, and you are instate CA, SLO may get the nod.

Sorry I thought that name was my2callgirls…

^ @chardo love this lol. Why have one when you can have two.

Unless Alabama is way more cheaper, I’d go with San Luis Obispo. More prestige, higher graduation rates, better weather, and in my subjective view, CA>AL

Alabama is about 5k cheaper than SLO (as of now). I am an OOS student from Louisiana and I have the Foundation in Excellence scholar which is about 13k a year. Is it worth it to go to SLO over that difference? SLO’s campus is really nice and its in the west. Then again, Alabama has that #1 football team…not that it plays a big part in education lol.

Do you have to pay or do your parents?

Be sure to factor the time and expense required to get to SLO into your total cost of attendance.
It really is a terrific school for the right student, but not near any major airports (only a very small regional) and there is no easy or direct transport.

The reason they do not mention the time (in hours) to get from either San Francisco or Los Angeles on their direction page, is that it will take quite a while to get there - 3.25 hours drive time from LAX and 3.5 hours from SFO, and that’s with no traffic.

Yes, slo is very remote if you are flying in, logistics will be a problem from any of the airports that would service your home state. I’m not even sure how you would do it, as you can’t rent a car at your age… possibly train? At any rate it will be a big problem getting there and getting out for holidays. We drive up from Los Angeles, 3 hrs, not bad. But to fly in from around the country and get to the school will not be fun.

There’s an amtrak station on campus

Even still, you are looking at a 4 or 5 hour flight plus check in time, then waiting around, then a 3 hour train ride, plus the logistics of scheduling that, how often to trains depart from lax to slo? It sounds miserable. It may not be a deal breaker for some students, but it’s something to consider.

^why not just fly into SLO’s airport from LAX (or SFO or Phoenix)?

I’m not sure, I lived in slo for 2 years in the 90’s… I’m not sure what kind of flights that regional airport has? I’ve never actually heard of anyone flying in there, maybe because we are a 3 hour drive it wouldn’t be worthwhile.

There is a friendly regional airport in San Luis Obispo (airport code = SBP). It’s at the other end of town from Cal Poly, maybe 5 miles away. It currently connects to SFO and LAX (United) and to PHX (American), with 3-4 flights per day to each of these hubs. They are scheduled to add flights to SEA (Alaska) in April.

So to get to Cal Poly, you would fly to SFO, LAX, or PHX, then add a short connecting flight to SBP. Obviously this is more hassle and expense than getting to a college near a major airport, but it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker.

My son and his friends fly in/out of SLO’s airport when interviewing or attending conferences out of state. His girlfriend lived on the east coast and occasionally flew into SLO’s airport when coming back from break. It’s a small airport with limited flights but convenient.

Over 330,000 United/American passengers arrived or departed via SBP during the 2016 calendar year. So yes, some people actually do use it.

Granted, this is an average of fewer than 1,000 passengers per day, which is small by airport standards. But it’s large enough to sustain major airline service via regional jets.
