University of Alabama

Hi,

I'm not at UA.. Two of my sibs graduated from UA and I spent a lot of time there. I went to UAB.

Oh, ok. Dallasasian, it came with my Tier I Scholarship. If you have above a 1400 or a 33, and a 3.5 GPA, you automatically get this (I'm not sure if this is just in-state or not).

I have a 1420, a 4.06, and a buttload of ECs + leadership positions. I'm applying to the US Naval Academy (1st choice), West Point (2nd choice), USAFA (I'm a recruited soccer player there), Georgetown, and Notre Dame. Where else are you applying?

Tulane, Baylor, Texas A&M, and University of Texas @ Austin. What did you have to do to get that scholarship? Was there an interview required?

No, no interview. It's pretty much automatic. You send in your transcript and a short essay, and they give it to you. Check it out on the Alabama website. You'll get a link to it when you apply.

dallasasian, that package marines4me mentioned looks like the national merit scholarship package they offer. I got the same thing about one month ago and it convinced me to apply...always good to keep your options open.

Anyways, according to US News it's only 20% out of state. 7% of males are fraternity members, 9% of females are sorority members. Verbal: 490-610, Math: 500-610. ACT: 21-26. Average high school GPA: 3.3. ~87% acceptance rate. Number 86 among national universities.

Thats what I thought about the scholarship. It reminds me of the OU package to National Merit Finalists. However, the only thing that concerns me is that I do not have a leadership position. I have a lot of extracurriculars though, but I don't think that will make up for hte lack of leadership positions. :(

BTW where do I send my essay for the tier 1 scholarships? Sorry for all the questions.

Actually I'm also applying to UA and looking at the big scholarships they offer and some of them are pretty tempting. The Tier I scholarship is insanely selective however with only 20-25 people getting it (but it comes with full ride plus $8k per year) while all NMSF get the standard package of laptop/fullride if you mark them as first choice.

dallasasian, I chatted with the admissions people online the other day and they just said send it ASAP to the admissions office. I'm in the same boat as you with lots of involvement and academics, but few "on paper" leadership things.

here's to hoping that they won't notice that little question.

Interesting... I'm not NMSF, but I guess maybe in-state has it easier for the Tier I scholarships?

I've spent the last two summers at UA in special pre-college programs. UA is a really nice school. All people in Alabama are not rich and stuck up. Haha! And UA is a competitive school with a large number of intellectuals. If I'm not mistaken, a 32 ACT will get you a full ride and 27 ACT, full tuition. With your stats, I'd go for it. Roll Tide!

In regard to marines4me, yeah, I think there's a number of instate only ones and some for alumni only too. Did you say you were already offered one or just hoped for it? When I talked to them, they said they would choose people to invite down in Jan. for an interview.

What is 32 ACT in SAT terms?
