Anyone considering UBC? My d was accepted a few days ago. Pros and Cons?

Try posting this on the McGill board: a lot of them also applied to ubc.

Excellent school, excellent location (Vancouver). Top notch academics-- overall, very good.

yeah, UBC is a great school... very difficult, though. I am transfering from UBC right now (I couldn't get international funding because my parents made too much money). But you can't beat Vancouver, UBC's nude beach, the awesome professors, the engaging and extremely social environment, et cetera. It's great. Tough, but great. Supposed to have the rigor of a US ivy-league (hence it's being called a Canadian Ivy), and it is ranked the second best in Canada by international standards. Now Canada itself ranks UBC as its third or fourth best university (behind U of Toronto, McGill, and sometimes Queens), but international rankings have U of Toronto as 27th in the world, UBC as 35th in the world, and Mcgill as 79th in the world (these ranking are influenced most by research, and UBC is basically a research institution). Hopefully this helps. A UBC degree is valuable, and not easy to earn. Furthermore, you will only pay around $20,000.00 (USD) to study at UBC per year. A good US University will cost around $40,000.00. If you can afford that in cash (as Uncle Sam can be a real jerk with international students), then I say go for it. tty'all later,
Jon

Vancouver is the most beautiful city in the world. I visited it two years ago and I was blown away. If you ahve the chance to study there, do it, Canadians are so nice and UBC has an excellent reputation!

I applied to UBC as an international.

btw.. does UBC have rolling admissions for internationals?

no matter what situation...UBC is under Toronto and McGill, no questions asked...and close to being tied with Queen's

Went to UBC info session in LA today. I was very impressed with the presentation. Staff, recruiters and alum were all on hand. Seem to be very proud of their program and the caliber of entering students.

hi guys, I'm from vancouver here.
i do go to the best high school in the province but i have retarded low GPA so i cant apply to UBC, instead i applied to the states and what not

UBC is great, kind of hard to get in, a bit competitive, but once you get in, the vancouverites are chill, the campus is sick, profs are great, you will definetly love it here.

"no matter what situation...UBC is under Toronto and McGill, no questions asked...and close to being tied with Queen's"

going to the best school in the province, and 2nd in this country (canada)
i'd probally get into toronto and mcgill but not UBC, ubc is MUCH more competive, and seriously, is UCI better or is UCD better? kind of hard to debate. another analogy would be comparing UBC and toronto/mcgill to UCB and UCLA

I found out I was accepted today.

I'm seriously considering going, and I probably will end up there if I don't get into my 2 top choices :).

Hm, that's odd, I was accepted to UBC and rejected from Arts faculty at McGill and waitlisted for faculty of ed there.

hey wolfstarlasher,

i'm from BC. where you from? what are your stats?

I live in Ohio, but I've also lived in Asia and Europe, so I'm not really from anywhere.

SAT: 700V 640M
SAT II: 780/680/640
GPA: 3.45

...you serious, wolfstarslasher? I applied and was told I wouldn't get the results until May 1. But for reference, here are the stats of this Illinoisian:

SAT I: 720 Verbal, 730 Mathematics
SAT II: 800 (World History) / 740 (Mathematics IC) / 800 (Writing)
GPA: 3.33

Anyway, to which department(s) were you accepted? I'm hoping to get accepted to the Department of Arch

What do you guys think of University of Waterloo? How does that compare with the other Canadian universities?

I heard that University of Waterloo is the best engineering school... hence the name "MIT of Canada" Known for it's incredible co-op program especially in engineering. It has one of the best math programs in North America.

Hey ppl! i'm an international applicant & i have afew questions regarding candian univs-

1>How good is McMaster for computer Engineering?

2> How is UWaterloo's Comp Sci program? Is it possible to transfer to the engineering school in the second yr?

3> About OUAC.. i have an offer from Mac ( expires on 6 May) and Uwaterloo, however, my UofT decision would prob. come out in mid-may ( cuz i am yet to give the IELTS). so can i accept the offer and later cancel it if i get into UofT? or does OUAC withdraw my other ontario apps once i accept an offer?

i live like rite next to ubc...beautiful campus..but watch out for ppl on wreck beach who run around naked....

prethumous: your stats kick mine in the butt, so you should have no problem. I think based on your gpa you should get $2000 as well. That's what I got (.05 higher and I would have gotten $4000! Grr.)

UBC has rolling admissions, so keep on checking your app status. That's how I first found out I got in (the mailing came a week or so later). I applied in October and found out in mid-late March.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going to UBC. Will anyone else here be attending?

How is diversity at UBC? I know Vancouver is a very diverse city, but does every one mix? Is it a salad bowl or a melting pot? Does any one ethnic group dominate? (I hear there are tons of HKers) I'm pretty sick of self-segregation here in the States...

very diverse. or so my fren whos studyin there says. lotsa people from china, hk, indonesia etc.
