University of California davis

Is it a good school?what do you guys have to say about UCD

It's a fine school; ranks in the top four of the UCs. The best of the UCs in topics having to do with agriculture, one of the best in biological sciences of all types, one of the best in history and international relations, many other fine departments.

If you have more questions, please be specific.

Respected within California, I've heard good things about it. Not too hard to get in compared to UCB, UCLA, UCSD. About equal to UCI, UCSB. Easier than UCSC, UCR, UCM.

However, it's in a rural area with cows and stuff.

ok thank you..and what about pepperdine university and calpoly san luis obispo?

CalPolySLO has really great programs in engineering and business, everything else is so-so.

Cal Poly also excellent in architecture, and ag science -- strong pre-vet program. Davis has one of the better "college town" feels of the UCs. Visit if you can.

If I were you, I would pick schools from the Big10 (Wisconsin, Penn State, Purdue, Indiana (good business)) than these schools from California. Pepp is not known outside of So Cal and is probably not worth the money; Cal Poly is too narrow-focused; UCD doesn't come to Californians' mind right away when they think of good schools (they got CalTech/UCB/Stanford/UCLA/UCSD already). Cal public schools aren't cheap anyway.

Eh, the same can be said about schools from the Big-10. Many people in California haven't even heard of those schools (with the exception of Purdue, perhaps). I don't want to get into a match of California Schools vs Big-10 Schools, but highlighting the negatives - and only the negatives - of the California schools is silly especially since you don't touch upon the negatives of the Big-10 schools.

In addition, your reasons are flawed. Cal-tech isn't well known outside of California, I don't hear anyone making a claim it is not a good school. One can make a case that U-Penn is too "narrow-focused" (Wharton), but UPenn is still a great school. Anyway, just a thought.

And yes, bby, I forgot to mention those programs.

no arguing please...

sfgiants,

I came from Hong Kong and lived in the east coast and midwest, before moving to California. I have already taken all the regional bias into consideration. That is, I am pretty sure people in the south, east coast, and foreign countries will more likely know about Wisc/Illinois/Penn State...than UCD, Pepperdine, and Cal Poly.

Illinois and Wisconsin are two of the most popular schools for good students from Hong Kong (good=Ivy/top privates rejects). Purdue/Illinois have top-10 engineering programs. Indiana has pretty good ug business. Penn State is considered good by lots of people; last year or so, a published article showed that Wisconsin produced the most number of Fortune 500 CEOs (tied with Harvard; probably still in the top-10 on per capita basis). I highlighted only the negatives because 1. I didn't want to write a 10-page analysis and 2. the OP didn't specify what he/she looked for so I just made comments on the most common (reputation and cost benefit). Many people agree that Big10 schools are decent from top to bottom. If you don't believe me, there are threads on which Div-1 conferences being the best academically and many put ACC/Big10 as the best, and Pac10 as close second (little too top-heavy).

I am just trying to help pateta00, not trying to promote Big10. I went to NU but I also went to Stanford and now live in Cal.

decent school and well respected around sacramento...but not really known outside of northern cali...

"I went to NU but I also went to Stanford and now live in Cal."
Congrats men!!!About the big 10 i've applied to UT austin UW-seattle, U florida Indiana university bloo. UC boulder...i would like one in CA

Fair enough.

Sam Lee i tried to send you a private mensage but for some reason i can't..so here is what i have posted on the parents form...tha's explain a little bit my interest in CA

"did a lot of brainstorming last nigh and here is the result.
I have two main dreams: became a college professor and/or work on enterteniment industry.
so in order to persuit my dream i decided to be educated in the USA(plus i love here).1 i though about applying to USC and Northwestern (film and tv major) but then i realised since i don't want to be a director or screenwriter i had no more reason to estudy film.So i thought about what i like and i came up with two ideias, since i'm very good in science and math why not do a major in science and a minor in Buss (or vice-versa). this way both of my dream would be possible.
Them i came up with a list of schools that were not too expensive( i have welthy parents but i thought wasn't fair to make them pay too much money) so i choosed public schools that had strong science programs , buss and also film, tv major(just in case i decided to go for it...well we never know).
UT austin
indiana university bloom.
UC boulder
UW-seattle
U florida
u pitt
but then i reaised that i have choosed those schools based only on prestige. That's when i freak out.. so i did more brainstorming and made i list of things i want .
-Nice weather
-in or near big city( i'm from i huge city i need to be near a large city)
-Good connections( for the enterteniment industry and also for grad school)
-friendlly student body( i've realised how important that is after going to some not friendly at all cities)
ok what about california..i haven't applied to any schools there.
USC too expensive, UCLA hard to get in, UCSD maybe, what about pepperdine university? what do you guys think?Maybe a college then i transfer to ucla?which college?
GUYS I NEED TWO MORE SCHOOLS THAT WOULD FIT MY REQUIREMENTS...I CANNOT GO SLEEP WITHOUT SOVING MY PROBLEM>>HELP"

Isn't Pepperdine as expensive as USC? It's easier to get in however. I heard biz is their strongest program.

I thought UCSB has decent sciences and it's in So Cal; so it may be a better choice than UCD if you decide to network for entertainment (a little bit harder to get in however).

Be aware that professorship is pretty competitive these days and you have to be pretty good to land one especially if you will be picky about where to teach (you said you need to be near a big city). My friend did his PhD at UCLA and now lives in Bakersfield because only CS Bakersfield gave him an offer. I am not trying to discourage you; just don't want you to be caught with surprise by the challenges ahead.

I don't know much about entertainment field. When you said you want to work in that field but doesn't want to be screenwriter/director, do you mean you want to be an actor? Or you mean like a finance guy in places like Warner Bros? I have heard that entertainment is kinda big on connection and where you get your degree is relatively secondary. My cousin told me some people do AP/AR (basic accounting jobs--EXTREMELY boring if you ask me) in production houses so they can build connection within and use that as stepping stone (it's easier to get accounting jobs).

I know is not easy to be a professor...about the enterteniment industry i don't know exactly what i want to do but wanna to be involved on it..Actor?/I did theater and i was pretty good but theater is so boring....I'm just trying to find that school that would offer gall the possibilities...what do you think??

pateta00 - I have similar aspirations. I want to work in the entertainment industry as well. I've looked into a bit, and I found a career as a business development associate. They basically plan out everything for new shows. Once they get the idea for a show, a group of these bus. development associates work together and figure out what is necessary for it to be completed, the cost of everything, and how to advertise it to the community.

So basically the big 3 for the entertainment industry are Los Angeles, New York, and Miami, so any schools around these major cities should provide some connections.

As for Pepperdine, I really reccommend the schools. It offers everything, and Pepperdine's top 3 majors are business, communications, and pre-med/science. It has great connections in LA, with major companies like Fox, Abc, E!, and MTV. The campus is amazing and the weather is always great. Everyone loves their school and they are all extremely friendly. The campus also has amazing dorms, many with ocean views. If you don't mind the religion requirements, and the weekly convocation classes, then this school may be a great choice for you. It is quite expensive, but you may get a scholarship.

Another option is the University of Miami, which is the best school in the entire world----this is where I want to go.

Also if you want more info on schools like Pepperdine, UCSB, or Miami.....PM me, I know a lot about them.
