University of California- Merced- firsth graduating class

^^sry, didn’t mean to be a downer, but then the OP’s comment did not make it clear that this was supposed to be a “celebratory” thread. Indeed, Karen’s comment was ‘don’t hear much about UCM…’; and, I for one, was suggesting a reason why : the campus was unneeded…

And, Yes, I heartily congratulate all graduates this year, even those from no-name community college. They’ve worked hard and earned plaudits.

That’s true. There is a state law prohibiting the conversion of CSU’s to UC’s. This law came about after the state college in Santa Barbara was converted to a UC back in the 1940’s. The Chancellor of the Cal State system complained bitterly, and got the law passed. Since then, all new UC’s have been built as brand new campuses. If the law didn’t exist, SDSU and Fresno State most likely would have been converted to UC’s as well.

For years the Central Valley complained that their region’s rate of UC attendance was way below state averages. They blamed this on the fact that there were no UC’s in their region. So when the UC System was expanded to accommodate Generation Y, the Central Valley politicians made sure that their region was served.
