just curious, but do ppl (esp outside of the US…in asian countries, etc) actually know what the UC system is?

for example, my grandparents (from taiwan) just know berkeley. they dont know its actually “UC berkeley” and that its part of a system with other UCs in it. my cousin in taiwan knows UCLA and berkeley but b/c ppl dont say “UC berkeley” but just “berkeley” he thinks UCLA and berkeley are nonrelated.

Also i didnt know theres actually “UCLA” stores in asian countries that sell UCLA apparel and stuff…pretty cool, so i guess they have established a fan base there.

oh yeah. since I am going to UCSD next yr im wondering how the name recognition is in and out of US. i dont think that many ppl kno outside kno about it since its like less than 50 yrs old, but do u think its name will be recognized internationally along with ucla and berkeley soon?

I think many people internationally only know "Berkeley". Not many know of "UCLA". Good luck trying to find someone who knows about UCSD and the rest.

A future UCSB Gaucho here, I am sad to say that UCLA and UCB have always had the "name" while the other UC's just kind of hang in there. I am not sure why this has happened, but it is the sad truth....

hey!!! U from Taiwan???, me too! I only been to US for 4 years and I am going UCSB. Well peopel in Taiwan generally only know UCB and UCLA and that's about it

Well let's put it this way, how many universities in Taiwan can you name? I've only heard of National Tsinghua University because it's the top technical university in Taiwan and I've met some of their graduates in grad school. You can't expect foreigners to know many universities, especially older ones.

I second what collegemom16 says. Just wondering: aren't UCB and UCLA the oldest of the UC's...therefore more well known, not only because of their excellency, but also because of their age in the UC system?

My aunt in Taiwan has heard of Cal Poly(I know it's not a UC but I am surprised she knows Cal Poly). The only big name university I know in Taiwan is the National Taiwan University aka taida

i guess there are a lot of Taiwanese in U.S...I knew many universities in Taiwan since I lived in Taiwan for 13 years, and i didn't know any US universities except Berkeley lol and now i am going UCSB

collegemom16, what do u mean by "With the number of Asian kids attending UCSD, UCI and UCD I think it is only a matter of time before these schools are known as well."???

Why do you need international recognition?
Businesses/companies around world do know UCs very well.

Usual people will never know UCs except for Berkeley and UCLA because Berkeley is the best public college in the US and it has one of the strongest research programs in the world. Berkeley has a lot of Novel prize winners. Then some people know UCLA. That's it. Other people rarely know what is UCSD/UCSB/UCD/UCI.

People generally know of Berkeley only, my friend who studied abroad and talked with some East coast students, and she said they don't even recognize UCLA as a top tier school.

I would assume these kids are in touch with their family and friends from their native countries. As more kids attend, more families will know about the other UC's and their excellent reputations.

Im from NJ and going to UCI in the fall, and from talking with family and friends, most people know UCLA due to sports and some know of Berkeley, though there is a chain of Berkeley Colleges in our area which is a crapy community college n ppl get it mixed up with that school. When i mention UCI they just think of how nice Cali is, weather, beaches etc.
