I am a California resident and I've been admitted to both schools. I didn't get much in my financial package from either school- so regardless I'll have to take out loans but UCSB tuition is cheaper. I plan to pursue something in the medical field (I want to get a BSN but UCSB doesn't have a program for that and UMICH does). Im torn between the two...where should I go???

Go to U of Mich. UCSB is a great school, but lacks prestige in most biology fields (with the exception of marine bio. If you want to go to med school, you need to go to a school with a medical school on campus so you can have more interactions with experts in the field and research opportunities.

what?!? UM is good, and a lot better than UCSB in bio, but it’s not worth taking $50k in loans every year. OP should go to UCSB SOLELY because of the price; the end result will be the same anyways; it’s not like OP will get a different education at michigan than at ucsb

I second what siglio21 says. If the price would be the same, I would say go to Michigan. But UCSB definitely if it’s cheaper. And visit the campuses too. Then decide. Trust me, you don’t want to pick a campus solely based on tuition issues.

If the rules for Michigan are the same as for most other states, you will only have to pay 50 k your first year. After that, you can declare residency in Michigan and pay in-state tuition. So in the end, you are paying 50k + (3 years)26k = 128k. If you go to UCSB, you are paying 32k per year. 32(4)=132. At the end of the day, the net price actually a little higher for ucsb. Before you decide, make sure you call the U of M financial aid office and make sure that you do actually get the in-state tuition rate after declaring residency by your soph year.
