Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Yes
Projected Concentration: Undecided
State (if domestic applicant): Illinois
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Biracial (Indian/White)
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 100,000 - 150,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Reflection
Strengths: 20 AP tests passed, the majority of which were independently studied.
Weaknesses: Barely any extracurriculars.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I showed a ridiculous commitment towards independent learning, with a large, large amount of self-study. I think my UChicago essay also helped sell my application: It was basically a huge rant about the position which teenagers are put in when they are at my age, and it bled my angst. It was a risky move, but it paid off.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Swarthmore, Rice, Brown, Northwestern
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I am so glad I took the risk in writing an emotional and angsty essay, I probably wouldn’t have gotten in if I hadn’t revealed my character through something like that.

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): NULL
ACT (breakdown): 33; English-36, Math-32, Reading-32, Science-30

IB (place score in parentheses): NULL

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar with Distinction, Top 10% of State in Math

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Clay Club(VP), Mu Alpha Theta (Historian), Youth in Government (Historian), Key Club, Fitness Club, NHS
Job/Work Experience: Work at Pump It Up (Kid Party Place)
Volunteer/Community Service: 90 hours a year (roughly), Feed My Starving Children (often), STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) program at public library, After-School Reading Program at elementary school, work in the slums of Mexico, Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF every year, other more minor stuff
Summer Activities: Went to a Kenyan orphanage
Essays: Common App Essay: background/story (talked about my grandma and parents and my ethnic history), wrote my own prompt “Where are you going?” (talked about this metaphorical path and used a lot of creative writing), Why UChicago? (talked about why I love it…obvi) I’m a creative writer to da max so my 1st was completely in prose form and the other two were very close to it as well.
Teacher Recommendations: Awesome (I didn’t get to read them but both of the teachers love me and I tell them about my life all the time, so we are super close)
Counselor Rec: Also awesome (My counselor and I talk all the time, and she told me that she had so much to write about me that was awesome)
Additional Rec: Thought about it, didn’t do it
Interview: The guy was really weird and couldn’t look at me (he kept looking over my shoulder), he was also short (he came to my shoulder and I’m 5’7), it was really short, but at the same time, I was really conversational and he said that he would definitely write me a great letter. So there’s that.

Applied for Financial Aid? Correct

Where else you are applying or have already applied: Already got into state schools, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, UC (Berkeley, San Diego, LA, and Santa Barbara), if I have time (Duke, NYU, Brown, Georgetown, Northwestern, Yale, Harvard)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I procrastinated. Don’t procrastinate. BFF your counselor. Write what you want to write, even if your parents might tell you otherwise; you have to be true to who you are in your writing, and the only way to do that is to write the way you want to.

Counselor Rec: Got my principal to write it. It was probably just so-so…she doesn’t know me that well.
Additional Rec: Got my English teacher (who has known me for four years) to write this. Talked about my involvement in politics as early as grade eight, and how I once did a presentation on the Syrian Revolution for an hour during class.
