Essays: My common app was WEIRD. I described my creative process and I spared no detail. It was a little rushed so (9/10). Why are you here? (10/10) I quoted Douglas Adams and went about it in a normal way, but I used a very comical tone that worked well. Why Uchicago (7/10). To be honest I wrote this the day before. Describe your favorites… (8/10) I love to geek out about things I love. I also had an abstract for my original psychological research project in the Additional Information category that was very complicated and scientific (9/10)
Teacher Recommendations: One was excellent. My english teacher loves my writing (10/10). The other finished it in 6 hours so I think he just copied and pasted a generic document with some small changes (6/10)

Essays:
Pick your own prompt - I wrote a humorous essay answering the question “If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?” I wanted it to stick out as being clever and entertaining, and I made sure it was extremely polished.(10/10)
Why UChicago - I wrote about how I was trying to find a college with something special besides amazing academics, prestige, etc. I used some weird Chinese proverbs to communicate my point. I think it was my only “scholarly” essay. (9/10)
Common App - I wrote about having a speech impediment until 4th grade, and how overcoming it sparked my love of language and theatre. It was pretty straightforward, but well written. (8/10)
Favorites - Heheh. I wrote about my favorite Japanese video game composers and the music I heard while playing N64 as a kid. When I first wrote this, I was having such a good time that it turned out to be 900 words. I just cut it down until it was a bit under a page, so it was kind of a bunch of jumbled thoughts about some composers I like. I figured it couldn’t hurt me! (6/10)
Recommendations: I had two very experienced teachers write mine, a senior bio teacher and a junior english teacher. I read neither letter, but assume they were well written as I have rapports with both women. Besides my counselor’s letter, my assistant principal wrote one (she actually asked ME if she could write one for me). They’re both wonderful and kind, so I figure their letters were very sweet.
Interview: I had a wonderful interview. My interviewer was a very successful businessman who’s currently head of corporate development for an investment company. Our interview lasted almost 2 hours, which I figured was a good sign, and was full of lots of lively chatter and laughter and discussion of the world in general rather than of UChicago. He actually suggested a bunch of colleges I should apply to besides UChicago! It was fun and really natural.

State (if domestic applicant): Kansas
School Type:Public

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None…?

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, Interview, ACT,
Weaknesses: SAT, Lack of Hooks
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think it was my essays. I put an insane amount of work into them, taking care to load them with my voice without sounding derpy like I normally do.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Nowhere!
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I think it’s important to portray yourself as accurately as you can. It’s impossible to know what a specific admissions counselor will be looking for, so all you can do is be yourself.

Goood luck and congratulations to all!

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: HONESTLY I HAVE NO IDEA. I guess the admissions committee liked my essays…

I was pretty set on going to McGill, but I applied to some universities in the US cuz what the hell. I expected a deferral, but in the end I was pleasantly surprised .
Honestly, this website can hurt you more than help you. It adds unnecessary stress to a stressful process. You don’t need people telling you that your scores are “too low”, because they don’t know crap about you. YOU KNOW YOU.
Be who you are, and take it easy.
Live long and prosper.

[] Essays: common app - pretty good. spent a long time on it. 7.5/10. extended essay - AMAZING. i’m completely and utterly convinced that this essay pushed me over the edge. I really loved this essay. To compare this with my CA one, I spent like 2 months on the CA, had so many ppl read it, and in the end i’m still kinda eh about it. With the extended one, I wrote it in like a week, and had 1 person check for things that didn’t make sense. And i am still in love with it. I used the untranslatable prompt.
[] Teacher Recommendation: should be good. English & Latin teachers.
[] Counselor Rec: said it was the best one he’s ever written for a student at my school

[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: essay!!! and maybe Questbridge.[/li] [/ul]General Comments:
So freaking excited. It doesn’t feel real. I’m in a daydream.
As a general note, i know it’s been said over and over again, but essays truly matter. You need to seem like a real person to the admissions officers. I’m NO admissions expert but i do think this is one thing that is definitely true.

**Decision: Accepted **

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): CR 730 Math 800 Writing 800 (superscore)
ACT (breakdown): no
SAT II (place score in parentheses): Math II (800) Lit (730) USH (720)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.092
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): no rank but cum laude
AP (place score in parentheses): Calc AB/BC (5) APUSH (5) AP Lang (5) AP Chem (3 - too ashamed to report lol)
IB (place score in parentheses): nope
Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP World History, AP Bio, Honors Linear Algebra, AP French Lang, Advanced Museum Research
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National French Awards, Harvard Book Award, Rotary Club Scholarship, debate awards, etc. Nothing major.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): debate (captain), honor cabinet member (like a disciplinary board, we make decisions with the deans), researcher/volunteer at paleontology museum
Job/Work Experience: n/a :(( thought this could have really hurt me
Volunteer/Community Service: Lots of hours doing tutoring, helping autistic kids, prison library project, etc. I also prepare and arrange exhibition for a paleontology museum (school program).
Summer Activities: Selective summer program at Yale, attended a seminar to discuss philosophy/classics, debate camp, leadership program at Brown…
Essays: 8/10 overall. Common app: wrote about my father and my cultural/political background, and how that inspired me to study poli sci. I’m generally a pretty decent writer, and I think the essay was very personal and genuine. Supplements: wrote about the core and why the humanities matter in Why Chicago, talked about censorship and media freedom in China in the “group of threes” essay, made a list of favorite books and music in the optional one.
Teacher Recommendations: Should be good. My APUSH teacher really likes me and has the reputation for writing really good recs. As for my AP Chem teacher, I wasn’t a spectacular student in that class, but we talked a lot outside of the classroom, and she asked my instructor for paleontological research to co-write it - that may have added some interesting stuff.
Counselor Rec: My counselor taught me AP Lang for a semester, and he knows me fairly well on a personal basis, so I would say it’s decent.
Additional Rec: Nope.
Interview: Had a last minute alumni interview. It was very chill and informal (he didn’t take notes). I think I came through as someone really passionate about both political science (my intended major) and the intellectual vibe in UChicago in general.

Other
Applied for Financial Aid? Nope
Projected Concentration: Poli sci. Probably a minor in creative writing? idk.
State (if domestic applicant): CA (I go to school there.)
Country (if international applicant): China (nationality)
School Type: Private, very small. 100 kids in senior class.
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: idk
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): idk… My paleontology research maybe?

Reflection
Strengths: Decent stats, essays were personal, fossil research. If they actually looked at my “favorites” list, I’m also pretty well-read.
Weaknesses: Chinese national living in SoCal (most competitive pools ever). Essays were directly adopted from my Columbia ones (I shamelessly recycled my essay about Columbia’s Core with a little bit of changes and elaboration. I was really worried that they could tell at the first sight and reject me on the spot.) Lack of ECs.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: UChicago takes at least one kid from my school every year. My GPA and SAT are pretty good, and my passion for politics and literature definitely stood out. I think my essays about the Chinese political system kind of turned my Asian background into an advantage; they humanized me a lot as an applicant.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Deferred from Columbia. Shooting for Yale and Brown regular.
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I honestly think I’m so lucky to get in - literally screamed all the way and jumped into my English teacher’s arms when I saw “Congratulations.” Another girl also applied from my school and I thought they were totally gonna take her: perfect grades, super smart, personality is a perfect match… but she got deferred. Admissions is really too random. If some school says no, it doesn’t change who you are. It’s probably their loss not to take you - move on and you’ll get something great. But some practical advices for future applicants: read more (it helps you write better), get good grades (at least it will be one less reason to reject you), talk to your teachers more and build personal relationships with them. Good luck guys!

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM - black, female scientist

Reflection
Strengths: Chicago specific essays, URM, Recommendations
Weaknesses: GPA, test scores
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The only reason why I filled this out is to prove that UChicago cares about the type of person applying, rather than test scores and GPA. It’s 100% about fit. If it wasn’t, I have no idea why I wasn’t denied. My GPA is horrible and my test scores are average. I know I’m a good fit for this school because I love learning, discussion based classes, surrounding myself with intelligent people who actually care about learning for the sake of learning. The nerdiness at this school is absolutely ridiculous and I LOVE it! I have no idea how I get in, but I’m running with it.
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Columbia (denied)
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Congrats to everyone accepted! I can’t wait to meet you guys! This is absolutely crazy.

-SAT I is pretty decent, and took 3 subject tests while the college required none

Weaknesses:
-GPA—> It wasn’t exceptionally amazing
-Essays—> I wasn’t fully satisfied with my essays

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
I think I they prized my academic effort just like a regular art/science college applicant combined with passion for fashion and art which was executed through my portfolio. My brother also attends Uchicago, so little bit of sibling legacy as well?

Weaknesses: My academics scores just make the cut? International asian?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Where else you are applying or have already applied: upenn accepted
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Work on essays a lot, start clubs, develop (a) theme(s) in your app. Make suree the activities make sense and are tied together and cohesive. Not random. I had two main themes. The majors I mentioned made sense and were like goals to my themes

[ *] Job/Work Experience: Volunteered at South African National Gallery; Worked at a retail store during the summer (didn’t list the latter on my app)
[ *] Volunteer/Community service: Tons, through Interact and outside of school. Definitely one of the most involved community service guys in my school.
[ *] Summer Activities: Summer Loving? JK, Volunteering and some part-time work.
[ *] Essays: 10/10 - Common App. One counsellor said it was the best she had ever seen in her 13 years. Poured my soul into it. My Dartmouth supplemental was probably an 8/10.
[ *] Teacher Recommendation: Excellent. They all really wanted me to get in and I had good relationships with my teacher.
[ *] Counselor Rec: SUPERB. He has been like a father-figure to me. He knows me backwards. We’re tight. Called him at like 11:30pm the night I got accepted.
[ *] Additional Rec: Peer rec was also great. My friend is a published poet so he knew what he was doing.
[ *] Interview: Didin’t have one
[ *] Supplementary Material: None

Country (if international applicant): South Africa

[ *] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Very unique story (I am certain they had never read anything like it)

[ /list]Reflection
[ *] Strengths: My essays. Like I said before, I poured my soul into it and it was so me. Also such a powerful, unique African story and I think that was something they wanted on campus. All my recommendations were also of the highest quality. I am so fortunate to have had people who really wanted me to get in.
[ *] Weaknesses: Test scores weren’t the greatest but I guess they were decent for my region. My transcript was also terrible in freshman year. The upward trend was almost exponential. I found like 4 grammar errors in my UChicago essays after I submitted.
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: We understood each other very well.
[ *] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted ED to Dartmouth.

[/list]General Comments:
To everyone reading this, particularly internationals, I really think that once you pass a certain mark (I’d say 32/33 ACT or 1400 SAT) test scores really doesn’t matter that much. Focus on becoming a whole person. Know yourself and market the best version of yourself to UChicago. I feel I did that very well so my essays and recommendations were the only reason I got in. Have faith that you can achieve the type of greatness that test scores don’t predict. I am so fortunate to be in this position and I appreciate the help I got along the way. Never dreamed I would be posting my stats like this.
To my fellow admits - see you in the fall!
To everyone else who got deferred/rejected - Obama got rejected from Swarthmore, so I’m expecting even bigger things from you guys.

Additional Rec: Rowing Coach (8/10)–new coach and didn’t see the letter, but I am assuming it is good

Projected Concentration: Economics/Statistics
State (if domestic applicant): CA
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: small, religious
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 250,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): literally nothing. Im a white jewish male.

Strengths: GPA, courseload, ECs (very unique ECs), and my essays–my essays were what got me in Im convinced, I spent weeks on them and poured my heart and soul into them.
Weaknesses: Scores–SAT is not very good and caused me a lot of anxiety, lack of Hooks
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays
Where else you are applying or have already applied: Wharton (deferred), Michigan Ross, Virginia, Harvard, Stanford
General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: Honestly, I know I sound like a broken record, but EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT IN THE END. I wanted to go to Wharton and Chicago equally and when I was deferred Wharton, I was very upset, but I got into UChicago and in my heart I knew it was a better fit. Have faith in AdComs that they will really know if you will fit in or not at the school. My biggest suggestion is to pursue the things you want to pursue and make sure you are unique in your essays and your ECS–everybody can have good test scores, so don’t kill yourself trying to go from 2100 to 2300, but instead distinguish yourself outside the classroom: I’m convinced that is what got me in. Good luck to everyone who was deferred and future applicants, and hello to my fellow accepted classmates UCHICAGO CLASS OF 2019
