UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO WAITLIST FOR CLASS OF 2019

From the post on the RD discussion, it seems they have placed MANY applicants on the waitlist. Please post if you have been waitlisted or if you know anything about the waitlist this year.

BTW- I am an international applicant that was aking for a lot of fa. If my situation has changed and my parents can contribute to nearly double of what I originally told UChicago- Should I inform the university when I send my “continued interest” email to my regional admission counselor? (UChicago is need-aware for international students)

Cross-Posting this from the other waitlist thread:

Alright, as someone who got off the waitlist last year, here’s what you all should do:

  1. Wait to see what other acceptances you get, and determine if you would rather be there than the UofC.
  2. Write a letter to the admissions office stating that you're still interested, updating them on any information, and (ONLY IF TRUE) that if you are accepted off the waitlist, you will attend.
  3. Send that letter.
  4. A couple weeks later, follow up and make sure that letter was received by the admissions office (I nearly got burned here; apparently they never saw my original letter so I had to send one in later).
  5. Put down a deposit at whatever institution you were accepted to that you prefer.
  6. Hope and Pray.

Note: There is anecdotal evidence that admissions looks very favorably on those who volunteer to take a gap year, and I personally think it’s been a wonderful experience for me. So, if it works for you and you really want UChicago, try to get on the Z-list.

And, most importantly, don’t stress over the waitlist. I was enrolled at Cornell before I was taken off Chicago’s waitlist, and I fell in love with that school as well. If you don’t get off the waitlist, you want to make sure that whatever choice you make is the best option for you.

Best of luck to all of you!

Should we send in a physical letter or through email? I already have a draft written up on Word (and I’m going to have to show it to a couple people to make sure I didn’t miss any grammatical errors because honestly, those are the worst,) but I’m not sure how to send it.

I doubt it matters all that much, but I did snail mail.

I’m on the waitlist too. I’m an international student. Fingers crossed!

Son WL too.

Would it hurt for me to both email my regional admissions counselor AND send physical letters to both the dean of admissions and the office of admissions? I have a friend who did just that, and she was accepted off of UPenn’s waiting list

@monkmonk I have the same question, lol. I’ve already sent my letter to my regional admissions counselor but I was trying to weigh whether or not sending it to the Dean of Admissions (snail mail) would be a smart idea or not…

There seems to be an amazing amount of people wait listed this year! Makes me nervous and happy at the same time. I am also an international applicant.

@bcmb97‌ Because UChicago is need aware for international students, I do think it would be a better choice to notify them of the new amount of expenses you are able to pay for. That, in my opinion, counts as an important update.

@kaarboer‌
So when you say wait until you see your results from other schools, do you mean it is best to send a letter to UChicago in early April? UChicago really is my first choice school, but I was wondering if they would take me as seriously if I sent them a letter before I even got results from the other schools I applied to.

When do people usually start getting taken off the wait list?

@hallowdreams‌ did you send physical mail to your regional counselor or an email on why you want to attend UCHICAGO in the fall?

Is it appropriate to send a letter of continued interest even if I have been accepted at 2 other top tier schools and I want Chicago as an option but I can’t promise I would attend if I got in?

Citusaltius, that’s just not the right thing to do. Other people need this opportunity, you just want it as a back up plan.

@monkmonk It was an email.

@searle123‌ it is not a back up plan. but it is also not my hands down #1 school I would go to without a second thought. I would love to have it as an option (if a letter of continued interest even changes anything) so that I can make a more informed choice about where I want to spend the next 4 years of my life.

how do you indicate that you’d be willing to take a gap year and does that mean that you would be forced to take a gap year if taken off the waitlist because I’m 50/50 about that cause I’m working on a candidate for Congress’s campaign and I’d also intern at the US Attorney’s office while volunteering at my local children’s hospital (just for fun, love those kids) so I’d stay busy but I’m also ready to start college :neutral_face: they really couldn’t have just admitted me the first time? :weary:

Also my interviewer totally loved me. To quote him, “Out of the 57 candidates I’ve interviewed you are hands-down the most impressive, articulate, compassionate, and intellectually ambitious.” He said that he’s going to write an additional letter for me to the admissions committee imploring them to let me in because he knows how good of a fit I’d be… Is that going to be a big deal?

soccerboy10: Sure sounds good to me. What might be especially helpful is the qualities he saw in you are the qualities that the admissions committee should be looking for. For your sake I hope your interviewer is a good writer!
Best of luck to you.

do you know how I can indicate that I’d be willing to take a gap year?
