University of Colorado Boulder EA for Fall 2023

OOS son accepted to Leeds - Finance
4.1 Weighted GPA (3.9 UW)
1360 SAT
Handful of AP and Honors courses
Varsity Hockey Captain
Good Extra Curriculars
Also received the Chancellors Scholarship ($6,250/year)

Good luck to all!

The reality is CU doesnā€™t need to award merit. They have one of the top aerospace programs in the country in a city that regularly ranks as one of the best places to live.

Even with merit awards, CU is pricey. Wealthy oos kids and in-state kids who come in with enough AP/DE credits to lop off a couple of years are the targets. The former will happily pay full freight to enjoy the Colorado lifestyle while the latter gets a great education in half the time.

The only kids getting merit aid are the ones CU really wants. It may not seem fair, but thatā€™s the reality. The pot of money only goes so far.

Correction: Transfer into Engineering requires a minimum grade of C in all core courses. The change to B- applies only to transfer into Business (Leeds). Another factor to consider is whether you can get into the required courses since that will be on a space available basis. If you canā€™t complete the coursework in time, you are not eligible to transfer. Too many hurdles IMO for someone who has other options unless you are really in love with the school.

How much is it for OOS kids to go to UCB pa all up, not including travel costs?

DD accepted without any Merit.

Thanks

It depends on the intended field of study, but oos tuition plus room and board starts at ~57k/yr and goes up from there.

same here. OOS D23 has super high stats, ECs, job, etc. No merit. No Honors invitation. ā– ā– ā– ? She emailed her AO to ask if all merit and Honors were already sent out or not.

This ā€œwealthyā€ OOS family will not be paying full freight. Also not an Engineering major though.

Yeah, we can afford to pay full freight but thatā€™s not gonna happen. NO ONE should pay full freight for college, especially at a state school. Thatā€™s dumb.

Ditto. Still annoyed by this. Mines offered our OOS very high stats kid their max $14K per year. U Denver offered their max $30K per year. Yet not a penny from CU Boulder. Really hoping they simply havenā€™t notified everyone yet.

Same here - especially when there are other OOS state schools that offer same outdoor opportunities and are (much) cheaper with excellent programs (U of U - looking at you).

Their scholarship webpage states that ā€œto be consideredā€¦ā€ for OOS scholarships, you need to meet certain criteria, but itā€™s not guaranteed. The admissions process at all schools is all different, so you never can tell why some are chosen for honors or scholarships over others. Itā€™s frustrating but schools are trying to fulfill a balanced class given all their applicants.

The CU Boulder scholarship information page clearly states that ACT/SAT scores will not be considered. It is a holistic review. So yes high stats in the sense of GPA and rigor of coursework but standardized test results are irrelevant. It is not like some colleges where you can determine your merit aid from an on-line calculator.

Same for my son. Was your daughter accepted into RAP to live at Andrews Hall for pre-business?

Yup so Iā€™m wondering if any merit can come later? Trying to decide on whether or not to do a tour or not even bother. For us that means flight, hotelā€¦

Iā€™d call admissions and ask.

Then why have that price? No one used to pay full price for cars but now everyone does (or even more) if thatā€™s the car you want.

Out of state students pay full price for Cal and UCLA. Are they dumb?

CU is a public school, funded in large part by the taxpayers of Colorado with a long list of people who want to go. Mines has a lot of private funding from alums, oil and gas companies, etc to offer more merit and grants. There was a time when every student in a certain major (thermo-something?) got a full scholarship because an alum left the department $$$$.

And CU has Coach Prime.

Thatā€™s not how merit scholarships usually work. It says on their own website itā€™s given to the top 10% of students.

in my minority opinion-- YES. Berkeley and UCLA are horribly crowded, huge classes, housing issues. My in-state kids didnā€™t even apply there and OOS tuition is much higher.

When I went looking for scholarship information for non-residents, this is what I found:

Eligibility

New students are considered for scholarships based on a comprehensive review of admission materials. Your academics are the main focus of review; however, your personal background is also taken into account.

To be considered you must demonstrate:

  • Minimum 3.6 weighted high school grade point average at time of application based on 4.0 scale
    • A high GPA alone may not be enough to qualify. Typically, about 25% of our incoming class earns a 4.0 GPA and not all students who are eligible receive a scholarship.
  • Difficulty of coursework and positive grade trend through high school
  • Extraordinary academic achievement relative to high school community

ACT/SAT test scores are not considered and will not be reviewed if submitted. Updated GPA or supporting materials will not be used for scholarship consideration after the admission application has been submitted.

Questions?

Keep in mind that scholarships are highly competitive. Not all students who are considered will receive an automatic consideration scholarship.
