My daughter desperately wants to go to UC Boulder, but our family just can’t afford the out of state tuition. Does anybody have any advice as to how we can go about getting in state tuition? Emancipation was mentioned at one point, but I’m not sure we want to go through that process. Do you know anyone that attended a community college in CO and then transferred after a year? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
When my D attended from OOS, she was advised to get a drivers license in Colorado immediately, and that started the one year countdown clock for residency. Her first year was OOS tuition and it became in-state the second. But, she was a grad student, so emancipation wasn’t an issue in our case.
Call the admissions office and/or financial aid office. I have heard that CO may allow undergrads to establish residency while enrolled part time.
Unless your family is willing to move to CO, you can’t get in-state tuition is my understanding. Schools have really made it much more difficult for out-of-state families to claim residency. Here are some links that may help:

“An individual who seeks to establish domicile while a registered student is presumed to be seeking domicile solely for tuition purposes, which is an unlawful purpose, absent clear and convincing evidence to the contrary.”
It can be done but it will be difficult.
- Emancipation immediately after she graduates from high school, (must occur at least one year before classes start)
- Moves to Colorado and works for one year before attending college (pays CO taxes, registers to vote, gets a CO drivers license, etc.)
OR
- Emancipate
- Go to school part time and have a full time job for at least one year
real difference here is that you would pay OOS tuition for one year, so you might as well go to community college for a year and transfer, if you don’t want that year wasted (as far as attending college is concerned)
Really depends on how desperate your DD is to attend CU.
My DD had a roommate who did exactly that.
@CU123 Thanks for replying. I sent you a PM.
@stradmom How old was your daughter when she attended?
@GManmom123
In state tuition at CU Boulder, is still at least $25,000 to $30,000 a year. So that adds up to over $100,000.
Engineering programs cost more than Arts and Sciences degrees at CU Boulder. Colorado residents
do not get a huge discount, to attend CU. Our community college in the Boulder area, Front Range CC,
is somewhat weak academically and no guarantees on transferring into Engineering. You may be able to transfer into Arts and Sciences, but students find it a huge jump in academic level and may flunk out when they get to Boulder. Front Range CC has campuses in Fort Collins, Westminster and Longmont. Front Range CC offers a lot of high school math and catch up programs as well as two year associates degrees. Front Range CC has mostly adjunct teachers, who are payed very little to teach and lots of teacher turnover.
Colorado State in Fort Collins costs less and is on WUE Exchange if she has good grades.
U of Northern Colorado offers the best nursing and education programs, and is significantly less expensive than CU Boulder. Its in Greeley, which is east of Loveland, so north of Boulder.
@Coloradomama the tuition numbers are not correct as my middle daughter is at Leeds which strangely enough is the more expensive then engineering. The cost was $9800 including fees this semester in-state, so less than $20k/yr
@CU123 Here is burger’s estimate of the cost of attendance in state, now some students get about half off the tuition but not the freshman room and board.
Business is about $32,900 per year in state.
Engineering is about $31,196 per year in state.
That does not include health insurance or a $232 one time new student fee!
Your daughter must have a scholarship, i bet.

Total cost as about right for those but tuition alone is what I said,
My tuition is like 10k and my room in south boulder has been 4k and I spent 1k on food. Total for this year = $15k, not bad imo
@spike22. Do you have a partial tuition scholarship? For tuition alone, Arts and Sciences at CU costs $12,086 per year. and I thought you studied at Leeds? Business majors pay $17,050 tuition a year without the fees. The original poster was out of state, though and may not win a scholarship. Freshman year will cost more as students are required to live on campus for one year. Its a good idea to understand the budget and not have surprises later.
