I’m having a really tough time deciding between these two schools. I want to major in engineering (I am undecided about which type). Any thoughts? Thanks so much!
You are probably looking for perspectives from students but I’ll give you my thoughts as a parent. Have you done a pros and cons list for each college? Sometimes it helps to see it in black and white. Is the travel to one college or the other more attractive? How about the cost? Have you visited both colleges? If not, I highly recommend that, if you can.
My daughter was down to 2 colleges and visited both campuses back to back weekends. When she was at U Del, she said she knew it was “it”, she did not get that feeling at the other campus.
My daughter looked at both U MASS Amherst and UDel, so I have been to both colleges, I personally love UDel but you have to go with what feels right for you. Good luck! Let us know what you decide!
ProudNYMaomma provides good advice. Both schools provide great Eng programs, with UD the clear winner in Chem. If you have no issue with cost, then visit again. Preferably while classes are in session. My D was down to the same schools for Nursing. She initially thought she liked Umass better. We visited both again 2 more times and UD quickly became the clear winner. I speak with some parents who dont put too much emphasis on school looks or location. I couldnt disagree more. You are going to be waking up every day on your campus and that first though should be a happy one. You will achieve more if you are comfortable and happy with your campus. The school work is hard enough, why not be surrounded by the beauty of a campus like UD. The campus’s also have two different feels. Again this is from a dad who sent his D off on her own. I thought Umass was nice, but had a “peace and love” feel to it, while UD had a preppy, “all American” feel. I felt more energy at UD. This is not to bash Umass, a feel is a feel. you need to figure out which feel will make you happier. good luck!!
My opinion… Both schools have good engineering programs. I got impression UD has capacity constraints in many of their engineering majors and very difficult to transfer from another major into engineering there esp mechanical and a few others whereas UMASS does not have much of this as issue (maybe because UMASS bigger? not sure). I have met with engineering dept for both schools and both programs seem to excellent. UMASS had more personal feeling in their engineering dept. I like both schools a lot.The level of school spirit seemed similar to me.
@karenayan4 , so I’m curious, what was your decision and why did you choose that college?
