University of Denver Class of 2020 - EA Decision Thread

Now that we are getting close to the release of Early Action admission decision’s I wanted to start this thread so we can all lean on each other for information and advice.

Feel free to post away any information or questions that you might have!!

Admitted! Found out Monday night by email/portal. 35 ACT/3.30 GPA No regular mail information on merit aid has arrived. Can’t afford sticker price, so hopeful.

I’m pretty sure my son received his admissions information packet with merit aid information later in December after getting email acceptance. He’s a junior at DU now.

@gunnerz - any thoughts and insight to share on your son’s experience at DU?

arc018, my son really likes DU. He’s never regretted choosing DU and attending DU. And we’re 1800 miles away. He fit in right from the start. DU has a week-long freshmen orientation program right before classes start; and a two-day freshmen parents’ orientation if a parent chooses.

As an incoming freshman I’d recommend the Jmac dorm/Johnson-McFarlane. It has a good location. My son’s floor was great.

As parents we’ve been extremely happy with DU. It’s expensive, no question. But it’s a private university. We know kids going to Colorado-Boulder as OOS students, paying about the same as we are at DU.

The area right off campus is nice with quick eating places, bars. Plenty of off-campus apartment and house rentals (after sophomore year), and Greek houses on- and off-campus.

The quarter system (like trimester) can be tough on students. Three quarters during the normal year, shorter quarters than semesters. Winter break can be tough depending on how the student handles it – finish before Thanksgiving and classes start the first Monday after Jan. 1.

Thanks for the prompt response! Quarter system does concern my daughter, but then again almost all the UCs are on the quarter system. But the DU calendar is unique with a break from Thanksgiving to New Years.

If we use the UC system are a baseline, most of these privates with a decent merit package end up coming in at ~ UC prices. Most OOS public will cost more.

My son loves DU also. He’s a sophomore now. The winter break is great for us, we live in Hawaii and this way we don’t have to deal with a short Thanksgiving break and the awkward 3 weeks between that and Christmas.

My son is a CS major with a theater minor. He got involved with theater productions right away his Freshman year. He stayed in Denver last summer, found a sublet off campus and kept working his job with University Tech Services (computer help desk). He’s looking forward to studying abroad next fall, working on his application now. The study abroad opportunities are fantastic, even for a CS major, he will still be able to finish in 4 years. He’s applying to go to Glasgow, Scotland.

He has found the classes challenging and interesting (for the most part), and met several good friends, and some nice faculty members.

Oh wow I got in with 1780 SAT 3.75 GPA. DU offered me $76,000 scholarships! I’m so ready to attend DU!!

@undeewear did you get a package in the mail or did the award show up on your portal or email?

And congrats!

Found out a few weeks ago through their portal and later on I got an official letter in the mail. It wasn’t a top choice for me until I found out I was going to get a $14,000 annual scholarship so that obviously changed things for me and my family. Does anyone have any insight/advice/experiences to share in regards to DU? I don’t know much about the university as my guidance counselor suggested I apply.

njclass2016, reading your nickname I assume you’re from New Jersey. We’re from New Jersey too and my son is a junior at DU. He loves DU, never regretted attending DU. I posted a response a few days ago earlier on this forum topic so you can read it for more feedback.

I think the campus is a perfect size. About 5,000 undergraduates so you get to know a lot of people. My son lived in Jmac/Johnson-MacFarlane freshman year and his floor became a tight bunch and remains friends with most of them. Second year he lived in a four-bedroom suite on the top floor of Nagel. He’s in an off-campus apartment now as a junior. He comes from a very strong high school and first-second quarters freshmen year he thought his classes weren’t that difficult. Classes get tougher as you progress, especially in your major. Plenty of quick , eating places within off-campus walking distance. The light-rail train stop by campus and take you into downtown Denver. We’re happy with DU.

Hi I’m applying for DU as my EA. Idk If I’m qualified:
I’m from Vietnam.
My GPA: 3.36 (I know, it’s horrible!)
My TOEFL: 105
My SAT: CR 650, M 680 and WR 640. Superscore: 1970

So do you think I’ll get in? How much scholarship do you think I’ll get? I got into DePaul earlier but they offer so little scholarship :frowning:

Replying for my son

He was accepted for Fall 2016 and got the Chancellor’s merit scholarship.

Deciding between DU and Colorado School of Mines, however it’s a sign of the times that, even with the Chancellor’s scholarship, Mines is still way cheaper :frowning:

@Abigail221 I have similar scores to you, 3.65UW and a 660CR, 710M, 610W for a superscore of 1980 and I got in. Scholarship is still in the mail so I have no clue, but it depends on your class rank relative to your GPA as well.

Any insights on the business school? Do kids like it? I got direct admission to it and am making my decision now.

Daughter’s envelope finally arrived! Dean Scholar $20K ($17K + $3K housing) plus a direct admit to Daniels.

I got the chancellor’s scholarship but the tuition is 60,000 so I would still have to pay around 36,000. Does anyone know anything about additional institutional grants/scholarships they offer and how much? My efc is veryyyy low so I was just going to put on my fafsa that I’ll be paying for college on my own.

What are you planning to study?

International Studies with a possible double major in a language

Oh, sorry, I only know about aid policies for the engineering school.
