Hi all!
I’m currently a junior studying at one of the top public high schools in the States. I’ve lived most of my life overseas (first ten yeas in the middle east, and three in London), and as I get closer to college application time, I’m beginning to look more seriously at going back overseas. The one college that has particularly caught my eye is the University of Edinburgh, mostly because I fell in love with the city when my dad and I used to go up for Hogmanay celebrations every winter.
That said and done, I have some questions about my application. I struggled a little bit during the first year or so of high school, and as such my GPA is only a 3.6 or 3.7 out of 4.0. My AP exam scores are as follows:
AP World History – 5
AP US History – 5
AP English Language – 5
AP Statistics – 5
AP Microeconomics – 4
And in my senior year I intend on taking AP Comparative Government/AP US Government, AP English Literature, AP Environmental Science and AP French Language.
My SAT subject test scores are as follows:
United States History: 780
World History: 770
English Literature: 790
My SAT reasoning test scores (single test date) are as follows:
Critical Reading: 780
Mathematics: 600
Writing: 800
My ACT composite score is 33.
What would you all say the likelihood is of me being accepted to the University of Edinburgh?
Thanks!
I don’t know much about how UK universities admit students. However I remember reading an article a few years back in the NY times about how the UK schools were under financial pressure, so they admitted a lot more internationals (full-pay).
From my (limited) knowledge of the UK system, you will need to pick a course of study, and apply for that. The major determinant of whether you get accepted or not hinges upon your interview with the tutor. So the critical thing for you would be to figure out first what course you want to study.
There is also a similar forum devoted to discussion of UK schools. Google Student Room and you will find it. Sorry I cannot link it here.
Aside from your math SAT score, your standardized test scores are well over the minimum required for admittence. Unless you’re going for a science/tech related degree (which your APs/SATs suggest is not your goal), you will probably get an unconditional. Get a better score on that math SAT to seal the deal. And, for the record, Edinburgh will not look at your grades, only test scores.
Definitely working on the math. I’m (obviously) not mathematically gifted, so it’s a struggle. I’m hoping they’ll overlook it though because I’m applying to study Arabic/Islamic History and Politics. We’ll see though. Thanks much!
Yeah, I’ve known for ages and ages what my intended course of study is (Arabic/Islamic History & Politics) so I’m hoping that will even out my, uh, not so hot math score. Thank you so much!
Hi guys I was just wondering the same thing about me. I live in Boston, Massachusetts and i really want to go to Edinburgh for economics (which requires mostly good math scores). I just want to say that my test scores and literally everything they ask for is far above their requirements (just like the scores of the person who made the thread).
My Scores:
SAT 1 CW: 730
SAT 1 Writing: 770
SAT 1 Math: 800
ACT: 35
SAT 2 Math lvl 2: 800
SAT 2 Physics: 760
Junior AP classes:
AP Physics: 5
AP US History: 4
Current AP classes:
AP AB calc
AP Bio
AP chemistry
AP psychology
My only dreaded concern is that I am about a month and a half past the deadline. Since I live in the US, I am still allowed to apply, but will my good scores cancel out the fact that I am a little late?
