My daughter was accepted to Univ of Edinburgh as a full time student. She is american. Are there any thoughts out there as to what that experience would be like. She is thrilled but now that the possibilty of going there is real it is a bit daunting. Thank you in advance!

I am an American who is doing a full-time degree at Edinburgh. I love it here. It’s been an amazing experience, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. That being said, you daughter has to be prepared to be hugely independent once she gets over here. Everything from the courses and course-work to living arrangements require far more independence than attending an American university.

The drinking culture will be a major difference: for a start it is legal so British students drink a lot: for example I am in a bar most days with my friends, and have a full ‘night out’ at least once a week, and this is by no means unusual. I believe this contrasts with the US where is still the ‘thrill’ of doing it ‘underage’ - in Britain consuming alcohol is a big part of the student experience.

I should add, feel free to PM me anything you want about student life in Britain or life in Britain in general.
