University of Edinburgh International Relations

Hi everyone! I'm sort of new here so I hope I'm doing this properly. I'm an American student and just got accepted unconditionally to the University of Edinburgh for International Relations. It's one of my top choices and I'm going to visit in the Spring before I make a decision. I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions about attending the school, like how the experience is and maybe how it is for a US student? Student reviews are what I'm looking for. It's hard to find student perspectives for UK schools.

Any information is much appreciated! Thanks!

Hi! I am applying to apply to U of Edinburgh and was wondering what your stats are…

A blog I have found very useful as I consider schools in the UK is theuniguide.■■■■■■■■■■
It is run by three Americans currently attending the University of Edinburgh. They are great with answering questions! :D

Hope I helped…

Wow! That blog is so helpful, thank you so much!

By stats you mean scores and stuff, right? I’ll list them here, if I left something out let me know.

SAT I: 2140 (660 math, 710 writing, 770 reading)
SAT II: US History: 730 Literature: 710
AP: World History: 5 US History: 4 AP Eng. Lang&Comp: 5
Currently in AP Euro, AP Chinese, and AP US Gov for my AP classes.

Thanks again for the link, it helps SO much!

No problem. :)

The blog is great right? :D

Thank you so much for telling me your scores.

I have a 2150 (680CR, 700M, and 770W)
SAT II: Math I - 670 and US History (just took it so we’ll see).
AP: Biology: 3 :frowning: Language: 3 :frowning: and am taking AP Literature, Statistics, and Psychology this year.

I’m interested in psychology and linguistics so I hope poor scores in biology and english won’t reflect too poorly on me… :(

Did you get a conditional or unconditional offer?

How did you find inspiration for your personal statement? I’m really having difficulty starting/writing it…

EDIT:
Oh! I completely forgot!
I’ve also taken the ACT:
English 33
Math 27 :frowning:
Reading 32
Science 30
Composite 31
Essay 8 (writing with english 30)

Yes, it’s fantastic!

Sure! Your scores are really good, and I bet biology won’t matter too much. Not sure about English. From what I’ve heard from the rep I met, they mostly want to see that you’re taking tests that relate to the subject you’re applying for.

I got a conditional offer for Chinese and unconditional for International Relations.

The personal statement was tough, partially because I was applying for 2 programs. I based it loosely on my common app essay and started by saying how I became interested in the subjects, then why I want to study them. I tried to tell the story behind my interest but not get too off-track. The format they want is basically 2/3 academic, about why you’re qualified and stuff, and 1/3 personal, which I also tried to tie back to academic success. The UCAS website has a pretty good guide here: [UCAS - Your personal statement](http://www.ucas.co.uk/students/applying/howtoapply/personalstatement/)

Did that help at all?

Thanks! :)

I think I’m going to start off by writing about a book I read back in middle school that first got me interested in psychology and how I’ve stimulated that interest in extracurricular activities and by taking various related classes and deciding to self-study for the AP psychology exam.

How long was yours? What’s the limit again?

Also, I’m worried because I’m applying to Edinburgh for psych and linguistics but St. Andrews for psych and international relations and I can’t exactly write about my interest in all three so I’m planning on only writing about psychology.

Is that a bad idea…?

EDIT:

Or should I only apply for psych and make it a joint degree later/once accepted/if accepted?

Hey guys! I will also be applying to university of Edinburgh. I have some questions though. Could you guys assist me? I am a Bulgarian high school student (Grade 12) . I am filling out UCAS but I dont know how to fill out “Module/Unit 1” + subject ? In the education ( qualifications) section?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi sami914!
I’m not sure where you see “Module/Unit 1”… Did you put your school down as a high school or a university? What qualifications have you added? What qualification level did you select?

Oh! I just checked… I believe you selected either Bulgaria-Diploma za sredno obrazovanie or Bulgaria-Diploma za sredno spezialno obrazovanie, is that correct?

Have you already received one of these? I think by “module”, they mean courses taken…? Do you have other qualifications you can add? I’ve put my SAT, SAT II, AP, and ACT scores as qualifications on my application…

Cricket, the limit is 4000 characters and mine was about that long. I think that’s 700-800 ish words, but don’t quote me on that. Also, I think if you’re applying for international relations they would want you to have some of that in there. From what I’ve heard, it’s definitely possible to switch courses or switch to a joint degree once you get there, so I’d go that route, because you don’t want to lose any kind of offer because of the statement.

Hi Sami! I don’t think I can help much more than Cricket has, I also put those types of scores as my qualifications, and I listed out the classes I’ve taken in high school and the grades I got for the class. For me, it says “module details” underneath “grade,” and I left that blank. I’d recommend “liking” the UCAS facebook page and posting a question on Monday. They’re pretty prompt about replying and hopefully they’d know!

Well I can’t do psych and international relations and Edinburgh… It’s not a joint degree option… Should I only apply for psychology at all those universities? I think that would also help my chances…

Hmm. Since you seem to have a good statement idea for psych and you’re taking the AP, that might be a good idea. Don’t forget, you can always take IR classes your first two years and switch if you like it better than psych!

Thank you Cricket123! Thank you Pandapower2012. Yes that is what I checked (Diploma za zavursheno sredno obrazovanie) . I did the SAT should I add SAT scores? They don’t require them of me though since I am not a US high school student. When they say grade do they mean the grade for 12th grade?

Thanks again!

Could you guys also help me out with this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1243789-mcgill-university-high-school-transcript.html</a> . THANKS!!

Pandapower2012 , how did you get accepted so early? Is there a UK version of Early Decision?

Thank you PandaPower for your help and encouragement! :)

Sami, You can apply to UK unis at any time. I believe international applications are evaluated on a “rolling” basis so you get your offer as soon as your application has been reviewed.

Could you give me some more ifo on the “rolling” basis? So I can get accepted and be notified of my acceptance before the Jan.15 deadline?

Thanks!!

You apply, they consider your application, and they might admit you (possibly conditionally). It’s as simple as that. No waiting around for any specific deadline. I think I got an offer from Warwick about a week after filling in the UCAS form. The downside is the later you apply, the fewer places that are left so probably your chances of admission are lower.

Cupcake is right. I got my acceptance to Edinburgh exactly 3 weeks after I submitted the UCAS. Just try to get your app in as soon as you can so they can review it before the rush of applications.
