University of Edinburgh –– US Applicant

Hi all!
I’m currently a senior studying at one of the top public high schools in the States. I’ve lived most of my life overseas (first ten yeas in the middle east, and three in London), and the one college that has particularly caught my eye is the University of Edinburgh. I’m applying to two different degrees, History and History & Politics.

I struggled a little bit during the two and a half years of high school with an undiagnosed learning disorder, and as such my GPA is only a 3.5 out of 4.0. My AP exam scores are as follows:
AP World History – 5
AP US History – 5
AP English Language – 5
AP Statistics – 5

And this year I am taking, with the predicted scores as my teachers have submitted on my reference:
AP Comparative Government – 5
AP United State Government – 5
AP Environmental Science – 4
AP English Literature – 5
AP European History – 5
AP French Language and Culture – 4/5

My SAT subject test scores are as follows:
United States History: 720
World History: 700

My SAT reasoning test scores (single test date) are as follows:
Critical Reading: 760
Mathematics: 660
Writing: 770

My ACT composite score is 33.

What would you all say the likelihood is of me being accepted to the University of Edinburgh?
Thanks!

You have very good chances. Many american applicants report that UE never asked for transcripts in the admission cycle. My daughter applied, too. It is one of her top choices.

Also take a look at St Andrews. They take a lot of US students.

Your in

Ahaha, that’s actually one of the reasons I’m not applying to St. Andrews. For some really strange reason, about two years ago my 1800 person public school sent about 10 people to St. Andrews, and I’m not keen for a family reunion at uni. But thank you so much for the suggestion!

Wonderful – thank you! And best of luck to your daughter!!

I hope so, thank you!!

My son received an offer yesterday for Psychology, and he has the same scores for the same AP tests (except he didn’t take Statistics)… and similar scores on the ACT (he hasn’t taken the SAT, yet)… and similar scores on two SAT Subject tests. He also has four current AP classes with predicted 5s. The only condition on the offer was that he obtain a 650 or higher on a Math Subject test during the 2015/16 term. He had a Subject Math score “pending” at the time he applied (Oct. 15), so by yesterday, he already knew that score was almost a hundred points higher than the requirement, which meant he had already met the condition. It is a huge relief for him to already have an unconditional offer from a school he really likes, and we visited Edinburgh when he was twelve, so he has some idea of what to expect. From what I understand, with the scores you posted, if you are a non-EU/non-UK applicant, you are very likely to be admitted, as long as you meet any subject prerequisites and have an acceptable personal statement and reference. (I am obviously not an expert on this, so keep that in mind.) Edinburgh did not ask for high school grades. Have you applied yet? My son’s offer came less than three weeks after his application. Good luck!

You have a great chance to get in. It is a great school and Edinburgh is easily the second best city in the UK!
