University of Edinburgh vs. Georgetown University vs. King's College London

Hey College Confidential!

I have recently been deciding between the University of Edinburgh, Georgetown University and King’s College, which I have been accepted to. Please give me your thoughts. The most important factors to me are:
Academics
Reputation
Student life
Prestige

Thanks!

What is your intended major?

The education may be pretty different.
Lots more flexibility at Georgetown, less at Edinburgh, even less at KCL. Continuous assessment at Georgetown. Marks more coming down to end-of-year tests/papers at the UK schools.

The campus environment would also be different. Georgetown has a real campus in a residential part of DC. Edinburgh has a campus in the middle of Edinburgh but residences are spread out through Edinburgh. KCL has a collection of buildings and residences spread throughout London.

I personally feel that Georgetown>Edinburgh>KCL in reputation/prestige. That’s definitely true in the US. Maybe flip Edinburgh and Georgetown in the UK.

And yes, what major and costs?

Are you a British or American student? Where do you plan to settle post-graduation? If you hope to stay stateside post-graduation, I’d pick Georgetown. I can’t say I know much about the British schools though.

@pupscotch

OP is a US citizen living in Israel

I want to study Medicine for grad school, so my undergrad would be chem bio etc. I hope to study medicine in the US, and as I am an American citizen, I don’t think that studying abroad would hinder me. Thanks for the answers and please continue to weight in!

It would be virtually impossible to apply for an American med school by going to undergrad in the UK without taking extra courses at some American school, and even then, I don’t know if American med schools would know how to deal with British honours.
And you’d have all sorts of other difficulties as well.

Alright I’ll look into that. Thanks! But could you also weigh in on my initial questions? I specifically am looking for the answers to those questions; I am well aware of the other factors.

If you’re well aware of those other factors, then I don’t know why you asked the questions you asked. Especially about prestige/reputation.

I asked them so they can help me make an informed decision. Could you weigh in on the questions? Thanks.

I did. See above.

Though again, the fact that UK unis do not satisfy American pre-med requirements should be a greater factor in your informed decision than any of your questions.

Great. Thank you so much for the input! How about studying my undergrad at the UK, and then study graduate medicine in the UK as well? How would that work, and how competitive is admission to graduate medical study in the UK?

There are paths for those who studied undergrad in something other than medicine, but if you are not a UK citizen, your odds are extremely slim. For a Brit, getting in to a medical program is as tough as getting in to Oxbridge. For a non-Brit, it would be even tougher.

And what would be your end-goal?

As a non-Brit (and non-EU and non-Commonwealth), your chances at bring able to practice in the UK are essentially zero, and as that link I posted noted, Americans who go to a non-NA med school will have a very difficult time getting a residency in the US (and thus practicing). Aaaaand, you would have sunk of ton of money in to a medical education by that point.
