University of Edinburgh

If you’re only going for a semester, that’ll be more than enough. If you’re coming for only a semester, you really only need to pack things like clothes and stuff. I’d recommend getting a cheap PAYG phone while you’re here; saves hassle worrying about mobile numbers and converters and stuff. Also, if you forget anything, you can either buy it here, or have your family post it to you.

And no, that is not true. Pretty much all British airlines (well, any airline for that matter) have a weight limit of 50lbs (~23kg), and anyway why would it matter? You’ll only get your suitcase for a short time to clear customs, and unless you plan on buying loads of really expensive stuff in Heathrow, the extra weight limit would be useless to you.

My D has just been accepted to the UofEdinburgh, in Economics and Political & Social History… and we need as much info as possible about accommodation recommendations. Does she go catered or self-catering? It looks like Pollock is far from the main campus, but I don’t know where they are relative to the Econ or science courses? Also, she’s vegetarian… will a ‘balanced diet’ be possible on their meal plans?

There is a lot of information on this subject on the UK version of this site, the student room. This is the url link for the specific accommodation thread, it is very informative and detailed: http://www.the student room.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2501595 (remove the spaces).

Yes, they have maps and guides to how long it takes to walk to each building, etc. My daughter only went for a semester, was a vegetarian at the time and went self-catered…she heard the food was horrible and didn’t think it was worth the extra money, but did like how close some of the catered halls were to her classes. She was in Sciennes and never walked more than 15 minutes though.
