University of Florida Admission Chances

I'm a high school senior that recently submitted his UF application (it will have been two weeks on Thursday, September 15th). UF is by far my top choice for college and I'm wondering what you all think of my chances of acceptance. If you want any more information than what I have listed, please ask. Thanks! :)

Academics:
Class Rank: Top 20%
GPA (unweighted): 3.65
(weighted): 3.9
I know these are relatively modest, as a freshman I attended a private Catholic school that operated on a 4.0 scale. I made sure to mention that in my app!

Current Senior Schedule:
AP Microeconomics
AP US Government
AP Statistics
AP English Literature
AP Psychology
Spanish III (Honors class)
DE Oceanography
DE Marine Biology

ACT: 32 English, 30 Reading, 29 Science, 24 Math, 29 Composite
SAT: Reading 570, Math 540, Writing 620, 1730 Composite
I will be retaking the SAT on October 1st and the ACT on October 22nd! I've been studying for the SAT moderately hard (haven't taken since sophomore year) and I'm ready to break 30 in the ACT after two 29s in a row

2012 Senior, White Male, Upper-Middle class family background, no legacy status, in-state student

Intended Major: International Studies (Mandarin Chinese); I made sure to specify my intended language, I'm assuming they won't get many applicants in that area

Essay Topic: I co-founded a non-profit organization. If I do say so myself, it was VERY well written. All of my friends in admissions positions and guidance counselors thought it was great and my AP Lit teacher said it was "beautiful".

I know my stats aren't outstanding, but it'd mean the world to me to be able to go to UF. If I don't make freshman admissions I have plenty of back-up plans, but they wouldn't be the same. Please let me know and thanks for reading!

Also, when should I send my transcript? Should I get it in right away so everything is out of the way or should I get more community service hours in first? I’m at about 100 right now if that makes a huge difference

Go to their website and you will see where you stand. Did you compute the gpa their way…throw out everything that isnt core and give yourself a .5 for honors and a 1 for ap…then look at website.
you never said if you were instate…?

You’re def. fine.

I think you are probably in, but it would be good if you could get your ACT up to a 30 or 31. Then, I don’t see how they could have grounds to reject you.

Your SATs seem very low. If you do not improve significantly, I would just go with the ACT, if the rules allow that.

Obviously, it is your ACT math score that is holding you down. I would make brushing up on my math your primary activity for the next 10 days.

That would be the most productive use of your time.

One or two answers may well put you over the top.

Thanks for the advice floridadad, I see you posting on this site all the time so I’m glad you could write.

I have taken UF off of the recipients for my SAT score, a practice test I took quite recently had me projected for about a flat 1790 so I’ll continue practicing math but I’ll only send my score if it looks good enough. My first SAT was not sent to them, only to UCF and USF, so my assumption is that they won’t be able to use it against me if I didn’t directly send it to them.

I’ve signed up for additional tutoring for the ACT math section. I know tutoring is supposed to be a sketchy business as far as standardized testing goes, but since ACT is more about spitting back acquired knowledge anyway I’m hoping to improve my score to about a 26 which will put me very close to the 30 range.

Thank you for the advice!

I appreciate the time you took to read this! Acceptance to UF is a very inconsistent occurrence but any support or advice is appreciated

“2012 Senior, White Male, Upper-Middle class family background, no legacy status, in-state student”

In the original post I did state that I was an in-state student, but I appreciate the time you took to look at it. Based on the standards you gave me I’m somewhere around a 3.8, which isn’t looking too great but I’m hoping to make up for through test scores. Your tips were invaluable, you have my thanks.

I’m almost positive you’re golden. I live in Florida, and while the admissions counselors are looking for some ECs, they really do look at SATs and GPAs mostly and they tend to overstate a bit at how hard it is to get in. You’re grades are great and ecs are great. Congrats. Just make sure you apply for housing or you’ll be living in an apartment on the outskirts of Gainesville. :)

Oh I did! I applied 3 days after I submitted my app, a very good friend of mine who is currently attending warned me about the housing demand so I’ve been accounted for in all areas for about a month.
UF certainly does love their GPAs and perhaps their SATs even more than that, but I’m definitely hoping my ECs, strength of schedule, application and ACT work in my favor. Thank you very much for you input, it’s always great to hear from another FL resident :)
